Are any firms in NY/NJ still hiring/have open applications? Or am I officially unemployed

Coming off a COA clerkship and have had no luck in NYC but have had a couple bites in DC. Can't tell if a bad year or just me (I don't have much prior NYC experience).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 1:54 pmAre any firms in NY/NJ still hiring/have open applications? I don't want to be alarmist, but it is such a bad spring for clerk hiring that it is probably more comparable to the better periods of 2008-2013 to anything more recent. So don't feel like it's a reflection on your candidacy.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 2:02 pmComing off a COA clerkship and have had no luck in NYC but have had a couple bites in DC. Also coming off of a COA clerkship (was at the district court just before). No luck with NYC; I’ve had a couple interviews, but then it seems like things went south right after the Silicon Valley Bank collapseAnonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 2:02 pmComing off a COA clerkship and have had no luck in NYC but have had a couple bites in DC. Wishing the best to everyone here. I am logging off this thread after having accepted an offer.
If I could give advice to those struggling -- don't hustle for a position you do not want. I had several offers at the end, many of which I chased only for their prestige. At the end of the day, you are going to be doing a job. Make sure it is one you actually want to do, not one that looks good. Life is short.

Will the economy still be this bad in 2024? Panicking internally about having to search post-COA (I didn’t go to a good law school)

Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
I'm not an expert, but this seems more like a long-delayed reaction to overhiring, and maybe minor layoffs for firms exposed to tech, rather than a fundamental problem with the firms. So it was going to happen eventually, just a question of how long the firms wait to do the inevitable.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 7:38 pmWill the economy still be this bad in 2024? Don't lose hope. Honestly, I would spam all the firms. I applied for more than 30 places and only a handful actually had an application open for clerks. The rest was just me sending my application materials to the firm's recruiter. Thankfully, I got a bunch of offers. This is in LA for context and I clerked outside Cali in a smaller district.

Wondering what firm if you wouldn't mind sharing. Have received a fair share of cold rejection but maybe there's hope for some of my apps I haven't heard back fromAnonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2023 3:24 pmRecently got a contact from a big firm in NY on an old application so seems like some firms are still looking.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 1:54 pmAre any firms in NY/NJ still hiring/have open applications? Also Dct + COA from T6 and had little luck in NYC. Got an offer in DC about a month ago though. Best of luck! keep applying and maybe follow up with firms if you have a reason for doing so and reiterate your interest.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 9:00 amNYC / T8 / Top 25%Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 1:36 amWhat market, what school/rank?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:06 pmIs it this bad for everyone, or is it just me? What is the typical start date for folks coming from clerkships? I'd like to take a couple months off in between, so asking for a late Oct/early Nov start date. Is that pretty common?

Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
You'll be fine. I view this period as an excellent opportunity to travel, and asked for a date later than that. My firm responded in 5 minutes that they had no problem with me taking months off, and wished me well.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 19, 2023 9:29 amWhat is the typical start date for folks coming from clerkships? Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
I am slowly feeling more and more hopeless about my post-clerkship prospects and I would love any advice/insight. I graduated from a low T14 in 2020, top 1/3 GPA, and worked as a litigation associate at a Vault 80 firm in NYC before leaving to start my current federal district court clerkship in a Deep South, flyover city, with a judge who has ties to my law school. I want to return to a big firm in NYC and I have applied to nearly 40 biglaw firms. These include cold emails seeking general lit positions, applying through clerk-specific application portals, and applying online and by email to posted litigation openings. I had a few friends forward my resume, but these did not yield any results. I’ve received 10 rejections, and total silence on everything else. Is there anything I can do improve my prospects? Should I follow up on applications/emails sent in January-March? I sent some cold emails to alums and former clerks at firms I’m interested in to “pick their brains” and see if they would refer me, but not a single person has answered. I hated my old firm and I don’t want to go back. I also have not reached out to them or kept in touch, so I fear they wouldn’t even take me back if I did reach out at this point, because it would be clear they are my last resort. When I left to begin clerking, several partners told me they expect/would love to have me back. I’m so upset that I was SO excited to clerk, I feel like I clawed my way into a federal clerkship, and it’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience in every way, but that I may have fucked my career by doing it.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
