Correct. One big law firm I interviewed with didn't get back to me until two and a half weeks later, but that's because I was in the early round of interviews and they needed to interview everyone before making decisions.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 12:31 pm"Two weeks is fine" as in, don't presume no-response = no?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 12:29 pmIt depends. Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
Just wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. At my law school getting a federal clerkship (which seems to be most of the people here) is so, so much harder than getting BigLaw. Everyone with a pulse and a bare minimum of social awareness gets BigLaw, whereas FC's are legitimately competitive and strong students can and do strike out. So how are people coming off clerkships without pre-arranged jobs, assuming everyone got a 2L SA?

Many people here have a return offer and are looking elsewhere. Others did not work at a firm in their 2L year. Others clerked at a firm that does not hold offers open.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. Some clerkship offers are also just good timing. In Boston at least, these can pop up and close quickly leaving those who don't have a job at a great firm able to secure them right away faster than others. That is what happened to me. Judge was looking for a three week turnaround time.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:50 pmMany people here have a return offer and are looking elsewhere. Also, Big Law is a generic term - and some of us are being very selective (think location, practice group, and actually about the type of work).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. For instance, commercial litigation is different based on the firm and the location. Or for example appellate DC work is totally different than appellate at a regional law firm on the west or east coast.

There are a significant number of judges that almost always hire students from regional schools.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:31 pmAlso, Big Law is a generic term - and some of us are being very selective (think location, practice group, and actually about the type of work).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. Most students at regional schools do not have 2L SA big law positions, and even with a federal clerkship, can struggle to obtain big law after clerking.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 7:43 pmWhat is that supposed to mean?throwawayt14 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:48 pmThere are a significant number of judges that almost always hire students from regional schools.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:31 pmAlso, Big Law is a generic term - and some of us are being very selective (think location, practice group, and actually about the type of work).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
This is sort of correct - it’s definitely possible to get a clerkship without having been able to get a biglaw position, especially with judges who are less concerned about traditional pedigree, and such a candidate can definitely struggle to get biglaw after. But generally the people at regional law schools getting clerkships are also the students from those schools who do get biglaw, just because you usually have to be at the very top of your class to get a federal clerkship out of a regional school.throwawayt14 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 7:51 pmMost students at regional schools do not have 2L SA big law positions, and even with a federal clerkship, can struggle to obtain big law after clerking.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 7:43 pmWhat is that supposed to mean?throwawayt14 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:48 pmThere are a significant number of judges that almost always hire students from regional schools.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:31 pmAlso, Big Law is a generic term - and some of us are being very selective (think location, practice group, and actually about the type of work).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread. Re: 2022-2023 Post-Clerkship Hiring
Seconding this, at least for the vast majority of clerks. I summered at a top firm in DC, virtually my entire summer class who were interested in lit clerked. All have the option of going back but post clerkship you have a better idea of the market and practice areas you're interested in. So, instead of going back you might apply to boutiques (in DC this is places like Kellogg, Zuckerman, Williams & Connolly), that are more selective than generic big law, or a firm that is stronger in an area you're interested in (antitrust at Cleary, appellate at GDC, etc.). Virtually all Art. III clerks can get big law, a lot are just gunning for something more selective which is why you're seeing people struggling a bit.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 6:31 pmAlso, Big Law is a generic term - and some of us are being very selective (think location, practice group, and actually about the type of work).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 1:46 pmJust wanna ask a good faith question because I'm a little confused by this thread.
