So I have a yearlong gap between federal clerkships and I’m looking for something to do to fill the gap. Any leads or advice is appreciated.

Fellowship, part-time biglaw work, volunteering (if you can afford it), traveling for a year.

State SG's Office fellowships can be great!

Co-sign this, if you can get one. I did one my second year out of law school, in between two clerkships, and got great brief-writing experience and two appellate arguments, one in my state's supreme court and one in a federal circuit. I've heard of other state SG fellows getting as many as five or six arguments during their one-year fellowship, which I have to imagine is pretty unbeatable.

If you have any interest in trial work/public interest, try a state public defender office. That is what I did and it ruined me (in a good way). It put a whole new perspective on the human element of practicing law, and made me much more empathetic when I was clerking.

The caveat however, is that you have to be all in for that year. Too many state PD offices have people only interested in the experience and not their indigent clients. It is only good experience if you dedicate yourself to it.
