How to apply for a CA Supreme Court clerkship?

Does anybody have insight into how one goes about applying for a clerkship on the California Supreme Court? Do I have to rely on my law school's clerkship office (please god say no)? I'd like to think I have the credentials to be considered (Top 10% at T14; currently clerking for a big city district court with a COA clerkship lined up in the same city for next year). But the application process is genuinely mysterious. Any tips or tricks welcome.
