Top 10% at CCN here. I applied to ~35 clerkships, mostly district court clerkships in major cities. I've only gotten two interview requests so far.

Just out of curiosity, what does top 10% mean? Double Kent?

Very hard to know but I'd say double kent is top 3-5% so high stone plus kent 2L is top 10%

2021 HLS cum laude grad here with a district clerkship already lined up for 2021-22. Zero responses yet on over 50 COA applications submitted for 2022-23

Similar story here. MVP '21 with '21-'22 district court lined up for the fall, around top 5-10% + LR, and radio silence on COA for '22 and '23. Had one off-plan interview a few months ago that went nowhere.

At CLS know a bunch of people hearing nothing from NY judges even with great #s.

I have above a 3.8 at CLS and most of my classes were "real" black letters. Recommenders I know pretty well who made calls. Applied to lots of non-NY judges. Nothing. Really curious if this is happening to others.

Rough few days for CLS. First, we continue to woefully underperform at clerkships, and then the head of career services leaves for Fordham a month before EIP.

CLS grad. anon. had 4 interviews last cycle as a 2L. Nothing so far. I too am disappointed with the lack of institutional support.

Another grad here. OJC has been so bad, ranging from just not good advice to actively wrong information. The office is deliberately opaque and extremely unhelpful. They need a complete overhaul.

I was a transfer this year fortunate enough to pick up a very good recommender this year, but my grades are nothing special in general for CLS despite very good 1L-school grades. I was told to not apply to certain judges by OJC basically might piss off this recommender because my grades weren't good enough. Is this...normal?

This advice is unfathomably bad. Give your judge list to your recommenders and see who they are comfortable calling for you.

I’ve received similar advice from a counselor in OJC and I simply asked my recommender and they were fine with it. If they’re extremely out of reach, then yeah don’t ask, but if they’re a slight reach, professors probably won’t care.

I thought so, lol. I'm not expecting to get much this year, but man, when is applying, not even asking for calls to more judges a bad thing? In this instance, I wasn't even asking this professor to call some of these reaches. If a professor is writing for you, they obviously don't think you're going to shit the bed...

I thought so, lol. I'm not expecting to get much this year, but man, when is applying, not even asking for calls to more judges a bad thing? In this instance, I wasn't even asking this professor to call some of these reaches. If a professor is writing for you, they obviously don't think you're going to shit the bed...

wrt letters and not calls that advice is unhinged. It's a mail merge, I would be surprised if your recommenders looked at every name on your list.

If you are class of 2022, this would probably be outside the top 10%. Close to 30 students, maybe more, got Kent your year because the standard was loosened by COVID P/F.

If you are class of 2022, this would probably be outside the top 10%. Close to 30 students, maybe more, got Kent your year because the standard was loosened by COVID P/F.

Fair enough - I'd say within top 15% then as there's over 400 2Ls so even with inflated Kent 1L you're prolly within top 50 but who knows.

CCN '21 grad. Top 10%, secondary journal, liberal straight white male. Accepted CA3 slot for '23-'24. Interviewed Tuesday.

e: re weirdo judge recommendation stuff, my school has a handful of very well connected professors who are selective with who they will recommend. e.g. a good friend is top 20% and otherwise similar to me, he had a professor with juice recommend him, but the professor refused to recommend him to any CoA. was explained to my friend that the professor won't recommend someone to a judge if they think the person isn't a candidate.

Don’t know how similar of a case, but I’m #1 at a T25, 30 apps, mixture of district court/COA, 0 interviews.

A 3.8 is closer to top 15%, but in any case, also 3.8 at CLS/NYU, 50 apps, 0 interviews.

Are we sure that judges haven’t decided to wait a bit after the plan opens? It’s oddly quiet, for me and everyone I know

For reference, 2020 MVP grad, top 15%, only looking at District Courts with a range of competitiveness. 20 apps, had profs call, nothing.
