Wilkinson timing

Is he pretty much full by mid-to-end of 1L or does any hiring after a semester of 2L grades or even "plan" timing?

My friend at HLS got Wilkinson in first semester of law school w/o an application basically. Prof in class she did well in just called on her behalf. All to say, you're probably only getting Wilkinson through those sort of plays.

Wilkinson is well-known to be one of those top feeder judges for whom networking and connections are essential. It's a particularly acute example of how impressing the right people at specific schools (esp HYS) can get you a feeder federal clerkship. I know of at least 2 people who got their clerkships with him after only 1 semester of 1L grades. (Albeit, it's not like they were slackers after they got their clerkships with him; both graduated magna from HYS and IIRC one then went on to SCOTUS).

If you need to ask, you're probably not getting Wilkinson. He takes recommendations from a few trusted faculty members at HYS and also interviews the top 3-4 students at UVA each year. So far as I know, all his hires have been off-plan and have come recommended by one or more of the aforementioned faculty members.
