I can't tell you whether he will be a consistent feeder, but I get the impression that Rao is more difficult to land.

Katsas is one of the three premier feeders in the country. Rao is right below that level. Walker is meh.

I could see Katsas and Rao hiring the same person. But not Walker.

Walker is always getting going to get good candidates by virtue of sitting on the DC Circuit, but he's not trying to be a feeder in any real sense. He maintains chambers in his own office in Kentucky and runs a fully remote clerkship.

All three of Katsas, Rao, and Walker look for broadly similar people though: very conservative with incredible grades and usually prior clerkships.

The level of competition for clerkships with the three Trump appointees correlates with the order in which they were appointed. Katsas is the most competitive, Walker is the least competitive, Rao is somewhere in the middle. I'm not sure if Rao's competitiveness is closer to Katsas or Walker, but I'd guess Katsas; Rao is at least much more interested in fancy paper credentials than Walker, who more regularly hires from lower-ranked schools and says he thinks students shouldn't have to go to the Harvards and Yales of the world to get good clerkships.

That's a COVID-era development then. Henderson is from South Carolina but that clerkship always had been in DC.

I’ve heard that Walker clerks can choose to work from Kentucky or DC but that Walker himself generally works from Kentucky

Dabney has hired heavily from my HYS but I dunno if that is a necessary condition

I know that she has conducted some interviews for the 2023-24 term. Don't know if she has looked beyond that term or even made offers for that term yet, though.

I see that certain D.C. circuit judges have "available" positions on OSCAR, e.g., Ginsburg and Henderson. Does anyone know if they're actually hiring?

They live all over the place, because DC is fairly small and easy to get around for the most part. Most of my fellow clerks lived in DC, but Virginia and Maryland are also pretty common, especially if you want more space. My recommendation is to live anywhere on the Red Line, as it makes getting to chambers much easier if you don't drive or bike to work. I found the Van Ness pretty good for families, but others may have opinions.
