Different anon. The Bress clerk is Pat Cipollone's daughter-in-law.

Original anon. Yep, and her dad was on the ND Law faculty with Barrett. Based on nonpublic info but it’s not a secret or anything, I’d guess they’ll be in the next Lat roundup.

Ok, def. not the most important thing facing our country right now: but wonder who KBJ or Kruger will take clerks from if they're nominated.

Has Lat been lacking on the update? Usually there was a Dec / Jan release on ATL

He posted. Jay Mitchell on the Alabama Supreme Court fed three—very unusual, I wonder what’s up with that.

Weirdly and disappointingly light update at this stage, especially for 2022. Also weirdly "diffuse" (the megafeeders on both sides of the aisle have like two each except for Sri and Pryor), but that might be because the update isn't full. Would have expected more #'s from Thapar / Sutton / Katsas. Livingston shut out. Bibas is matching them numbers-wise which is exciting for the 3d Cir, as is Rao. All this could be BS that resolves itself more clearly when a full list is published, but can OP / someone else update the spreadsheets?

Park (which has been known here) and Pacold (which hasn't been, to my knowledge) getting on the score sheet is cool. Mitchell -> Thomas obviously a rather big story, with some even triple-clerking to get him.

Also three feeds for Engelmayer but none for Oetken and only one for Furman, which is surprising.

Boasberg with four is impressive.

First feeds for Richardson, Pacold, Bibas, Bress, Park, Bush, and Walker, some of which have been noted on here before. Bush/Walker is the notably weird one—AMK also chose a slightly unusual clerk last year, so maybe he’s just stopped caring about resume vs. connections. Also I’m sure Easterbrook and Wood have fed before but their firsts in quite a while.

One of the Mitchell clerks (the Pryor/Thapar one) was reported to get CT earlier, and has seemingly been hired by Mitchell since, with a SCOTUS clerkship in hand, which is especially unusual.

I wonder if Thomas is asking his Pryor feeds to get some state court exposure if possible. One of his clerks, based on no knowledge other than just looking at his photo and stereotyping, does seem like the type of person that would prefer clerking another year while waiting for SCOTUS instead of working at a firm.

Gorsuch continues to march to the beat of his own drum by hiring a 2006 graduate who has never clerked before.

I think it mostly seems light because one of the presumptive justices for next term doesn't have the job yet. The rest are almost full besides Alito.

Boasberg has been really killing it these past few years with his feeds. Wonder if in 5ish years he'll go from a semi-feeder to straight feeder.

I'd consider him as feeder-ish as you can be for a district court judge already. who would be ahead of him in the district court pecking order?

didn't he hire a professor a few terms ago? if he's serious about originalism he should keep doing that

OP back. This is an update of the spreadsheet, now covering OT 2016 through David Lat's post of today.

Circuit judges, including the retired justices: https://imgur.com/a/z2BoSUu
Circuit judges, excluding the retired justices (but still including Breyer): https://imgur.com/a/PYhg0R5
Non-circuit judges, excluding the retired justices (but still including Breyer): https://imgur.com/a/JfSkGVB

The following circuit judges had one feed in the period: A. Duncan*, Ambro, Berzon, Bress, Bush, Cabranes, Carney, Christen, Clifton, Collins, Colloton, Elrod, Flaum, G. Lynch, Gruender, Hamilton, Higginbotham, Higginson, Holmes, Ikuta, J.R. Brown*, Jolly, K.N. Moore, Marcus, McKeague, Murguia, N.R. Smith, Newsom, Owen, Owens, P. Kelly, Rogers, S. Lynch, S. Thomas, S. Williams, Sack, Sentelle, Stras, Tymkovich, Walker, Wilkins, Wood

I don't have a spreadsheet for the non-circuit judges, including the retired justices this time. No principled reason, I just lost that data on accident in the last save. If you're curious about it, see the older posts in this thread.

Note that David Lat also keeps one on his site now, which is likely better than mine. I didn't check mine versus his. But mine is free, and at least pretty close to correct. As always, let me know if you spot any errors, and I will correct them in the next update.
