Re: 2023-2024 Clerkship Application Thread
Can anyone shed some light on the feeder — semi-feeder — non-feeder distinction? For example, when I hear “feeder,” I think someone who has sent at least five clerks to SCOTUS in the last five years. Is that accurate? Is a semi-feeder just anyone who has ever sent a single clerk? Thanks for any help

Re: 2023-2024 Clerkship Application Thread
I would say a semi-feeder is someone who has sent clerks, but sporadically. It's hard to put a number on it, but I would say any judge that has sent a clerk in the past 5 years could be considered a semi-feeder. As for the difference between semi-feeder and feeder, I think your metric is about right. However, there are obviously no hard lines here.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 4:16 pmCan anyone shed some light on the feeder — semi-feeder — non-feeder distinction? Has there been any district court movement for 2023? Has anyone been getting interviews for off-plan judges?

Does anyone know if Judge Thompson on the First Circuit has already hired for 2023? If she hasn’t, does anyone have an idea of when she looks at applications?

Re: 2023-2024 Clerkship Application Thread
Any advice on where I should be looking/prioritizing? Or what is realistic?
Transfer from T20 -> HLS - Had a 3.95 (top 3%) at T20 and now have a 3.73 at HLS (10H/6P). V5 NYC lit position.
Feel a little weak on LOR as a result of transferring (will be able to get them, but don't know if they will be incredible)
Lifelong midwesterner, ties to Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois (Chicago), and NY. Would be geographically very open but in a perfect world looking for something East Coast. Obviously prefer COA but know it is unlikely.

The most useful part of your app is definitely the hard tie to the general vicinity of Lake Michigan IMO.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 1:04 amAny advice on where I should be looking/prioritizing? Or what is realistic?

Both the east-coast circuits and CA7 tend to be quite selective, so you should apply nationally if you really want a COA.
If you’re open to the Midwestern district courts, you’re definitely competitive there with the exception of maybe NDIL (though it’s still worth applying). To the extent you can show a serious intent to return, that’ll help. It’s also worth blanketing the east-coast district courts with the exceptions of the most selective SDNY, EDNY, and DDC judges (i.e. the ones who will expect straight Hs with a COA in hand). You have solid but not outstanding grades and should apply accordingly.
Make sure to talk to profs and your clerkship people about this—you never know where they have connections

Will be applying very broadly for COA, unsure if my grades put me in serious contention but why not shoot shots. Don't really know what to expect on that front though since there are very limited data points on transfers. Any recs on circuits that are less competitive/more willing to flex on grades?
Good to know vis-a-vis the midwestern ties, I definitely have a very credible story for returning (all family is there, lived there for 4 years pre-LS, 1L school was there).
Any advice on sussing out the most grade selective judges? I know there are resources floating around somewhere but HLS has been pretty opaque on what is realistic and the thread-based formatting here makes it hard to find consolidated info.

Re: 2023-2024 Clerkship Application Thread
On SDNY, the most grade-selective judges are probably Rakoff, Oetken, Furman, Engelmayer, and Cronan. On EDNY, Komitee, Kovner and Matsumoto. On DDC, Boasberg, Moss, Mehta, McFadden, Friedrich, Nichols, and Leon. Of course even a “regular” judge on these courts is very selective.

Lovely - is this just consensus or is there somewhere comprehensive you'd recommend digging for this sort of info on other districtsAnonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 1:59 pmOn SDNY, the most grade-selective judges are probably Rakoff, Oetken, Furman, Engelmayer, and Cronan. Is Matsumoto really that grade selective? I know quite a few from my law school that had good but not great grades that clerked for her.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 1:59 pmOn SDNY, the most grade-selective judges are probably Rakoff, Oetken, Furman, Engelmayer, and Cronan. Admittedly those were the two I thought were most borderline, my metric was “does everyone I know who is clerking for this person also have a prestigious COA clerkship” and my social circle may be unrepresentative. The Komitee clerks I know are Bress and Scudder clerks, for example.

Yea, I don't think Matsumoto is super grade selective. My sense is that Komitee is very much so, however. All the people he interviewed at CLS were Kent. The one person I know clerking for Komitee is also clerking for Lohier.

Does anyone know anything about Gujarati or Liman in terms of selectivity?

Re: 2023-2024 Clerkship Application Thread
Hi! I am starting the clerkship process (current 2L applying on plan), but am first gen and at a loss at how to start or even think about what judges to apply to. I'm top 5 at MVP and have solid work experience before law school. I interned for a judge on D.D.C, and will be at a firm in D.C. this summer. I'd like to do circuit and district and am pretty geographically flexible. Where do you all think I've got a shot and what circuits/judges do you think I should target?
