How much does your course selection actually matter for clerkships?

I am currently a rising 2L on the absolute ass-end of the top 10% (magna/Order of the Coif), like literally by 0.01. This is allowing me to put "top 10%" on my resume for pre-OCI and OCI, and I really want to graduate magna. So basically what I want to do (especially with grade inflation) is do mostly seminars/experiential stuff/externships and not do Admin, etc. (Still planning on doing at least one major black-letter class per semester plus Con Law 2/Fed Courts.)

If I apply to clerkships, it would be after a year or two of experience with a firm, so like 4-5 years from now. How much will it hurt me at that point to have not done more black letter classes?
If by at least one black letter you mean literally only one blackletter and the rest BS this will absolutely matter and look very bad. Try to take two black letters a semester and if you do that feel free to slide in some BS classes. Also... some students will try less than they did 2L and you already are in the top 10%.... see no reason why you can't stay in top 10% with normal classes.

This post is largely not asking for advice but really just to vent about how horrible this process is. I killed myself working and am top 5 at MVP with writing awards, have big name professors calling, a lot of work experience, and was met with radio silence.
Top 10% at HLS with (not big name) professors calling and high grades in Admin/Fed Courts, a good 2L SA, and great work experience (albeit politically charged).

Didn't get a single interview. This process sucks horribly.

Does anyone know if Berzon (CA9) has interviewed or hired for her 2023 positions?

That's surprising. How broadly did you apply?

For 2023? It's basically all done. Saw that Brown just posted though in case you're interested.

Depends on the judge. If it makes you feel better, I had an interview I thought I crushed on Friday and still haven't heard anything.

100% depends by the judge and the circumstances. A friend of mine got an offer from a judge on the spot and another friend got an offer from the same judge weeks later. Just the way things work sometimes.

Semi-elite district, not SDNY/DDC level though

I had an offer within minutes from one judge, a few hours from another judge, and then have had nothing but radio silence for over three weeks at this point from another judge. The waiting is painful, but it does seem very idiosyncratic...

Same here. Wonder if any of those HYS kids that have access to spreadsheets of data will tell us which judges have moved in the last week to give us hope or put us out of our misery

OP: I'm waiting on SDNY/DDC level. Trying to hold out hope, but very well could be dead in the water.

Are we ever allowed to at some point email a judge asking for an update or is the general rule just hold tight forever.

You can but once you're in the 7-10+ days waiting with silence you basically know you're out so you're really just asking for an explicit No. If you want one, you'll probably get it.

Got a call from a judge today who follows the plan asking for an interview so there is (surprisingly) some movement left still.

Are people still getting nibbles from circuit judges, specifically?

I know someone interviewing next week for a COA spot. Not sure how/when they applied, though.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
