Anyone have any information about Judge Bumatay on the Ninth? I know he's new, but has already been in the news a lot.

He is certainly quite conservative. However, my impression is that his clerks like working for him and that he seems like a nice guy

Crossed paths with him when he was an AUSA. He is an entitled individual who felt he could do whatever he wanted because he was politically connected (and he was because he was appointed to that position completely unqualified). I wish him nothing but failure and reversals on his opinions.

Could you elaborate on why you considered him "entitled"? His resume, for example, is hardly lackluster.

Hard to give you an definitive answer without outing myself. But the issue involved targeting, and he strongly felt that he should be able to prosecute the case despite having put in no work/equity to develop the investigation. When confronted with this fact he stated he would continue to proceed with the case using evidence he did not derive.

I have dealt with many prosecutors within DOJ, but there are only a handful as callous at Patrick was.
Not to mention his voice is very irritating.

Not necessarily defending the guy because I know nothing about him but this feels homophobic.

also know nothing about him and know nothing about the anon poster who edited (removed) his post. But could potentially see the slight benefit of the doubt on this sole point as many Filipinos and first-gen Filipino Americans could be considered (by some) to have strong accents compared with more typical US English, e.g. stresses on different syllables. Totally different, but kind of a similar effect might be observed in English spoken by Indians/first-gen Indian households. Some people might find that hard to listen to, in which case I would argue they need to work on themselves rather than criticize others' voices as irritating. If anything it should be celebrated. We're still a melting pot last time I checked.

Regardless, this voice-point is a certainly a personal attack and was inappropriate.

I think the poster originally had a more full-throated attack and deleted because "it isn't worth it." I have heard nothing but wonderful things from his clerks, FWIW.

That was me. It wasn't a full-throated attack, but a repetition of not-great scuttlebutt about his path to the bench. I regretted it and deleted it. I should've been clearer that I wasn't commenting on the worth-it ness of clerking for him but instead the worth-it ness of how he got there.

One of the posts, since deleted, said he purposefully sought out the most cruel policies to work on for career advancement purposes in the Trump admin. (I think that’s sufficiently vague that it’s not outing anyone but that’s the gist).

I don't have any sources inside chambers, but all active CA9 judges are busy, and Bumatay is very active in the en banc process which can add to the workload as well.

Yes, of course. I was asking if he is unusually demanding for a 9th Circuit judge a la Kozinski.

Very nice guy. But he hires almost exclusively from right-wing circles. In my experience, the clerks he hires also lack the academic credentials most judges on CA9 would require. Draw your own conclusions.

Clerked for another SD-based COA judge, so had plenty of run ins with Bumatay's chambers.

Bumatay seems like a nice person and friendly. His clerks also seem well-adjusted and did not complain about being overly worked or stressed. I have heard that the interview is pretty intense, but I did not get the impression that the chambers was like that.

Bumatay is definitely very conservative, and he is also quite active in the en banc process, which could mean more work for the clerks.

Complete guess, but probably a holdover from Gorsuch being on the Tenth—i.e., they may have done the reunion together.

Also, Bumatay was apparently lent out by DOJ to aid in Gorsuch's nomination.

Bumatay also co-taught a seminar with Gorsuch in Iceland this summer
