This has been a huge week of confirmations for people still applying. There have been eight district court judges confirmed this week, five of whom will be stationed in major cities (plus one in CDCA but in Riverside) and all of whom were confirmed by overwhelming margins. Plus David Dugan and Stephen McGlynn of S.D. Ill. and Todd Robinson of SDCA should be confirmed tomorrow. Cloture has also been scheduled for Iain Johnston of NDIL (though he will probably be posted in Rockford, not Chicago). Also Jamie Grosshans was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court this week.

You should look through earlier confirmations this summer as well. Some, like John Cronan on SDNY, are already full for 2020 and 2021 and hiring for 2022. Anna Manasco is somehow full until 2023.

Anyone have any thoughts if the new appointees will post to OSCAR? Or should we send applications to chambers?

There are five more nominees that will likely get through the Committee tomorrow. There is a strong likelihood that they will also be confirmed soon.

Valdarrama, in NDIL and stationed in Chicago, should also be confirmed tomorrow. He is supported by Democrats and opposed by some Republicans.

Also note that the SDIL judges had a good amount of liberal opposition over guns and abortions. They got blue slips from Durbin and Duckworth despite that as part of a deal with the White House.

Do you have a source for this? I'm curious to read more.

Courts Matter Illinois had an op-ed in the Tribune about it today that Brian Fallon linked on Twitter. I'm sure there's more out there if you google around. Illinois has a longstanding screening committee system for nominees run by its senators, something like that for every two nominees the President's party gets the opposition gets one. Question 26 (the last one) of the Senate Judiciary Questionnaire for nominees is about how you were selected and nominees in Illinois typically describe it. It's how, for example, Mary Rowland got appointed by Trump and John Tharp got appointed by Obama. And how Scudder and St. Eve got appointed by Trump and confirmed unanimously-ish. Because of it the appointing president doesn't necessarily mean much in Illinois. You can see it even with older judges like Ilana Rovner, an incredibly liberal Bush I appointee on the Seventh Circuit.

It'll happen in the next few months. But it looked like it might happen before October. Now, it's possible it might not happen until after the election.

I agree. I could see it being as late as December.

Had an interview last Friday but haven’t heard anything since then. Safe to say that I got dinged?

Not unless they told you that you’d definitely hear from them by now if they were making you an offer (and even then, things happen). Some judges like to interview a complete pool before making an offer. No way to know unless they told you something very specific.

That said, you don’t have the offer until you have the offer, so you should mentally put it aside and move on.

While earlier is always better than later, I waited 2 and a half weeks for my offer and had mentally moved on when I got the call.

Does anyone have a sense if any of the judges in this latest batch will be a particularly shiny name to have on a resume for 2022 COA applications?

Going to a district that makes sense for your career is almost certainly more important, but Gujarati and Robinson were top AUSAs in their respective areas and Scarci, Blumenfeld, and Hinderaker were biglaw partners. If you define "batch" broadly Cronan is debatably the standout confirmee of the summer, particularly for conservatives, and he's tight with at least a few of the more prominent CA2 judges (including Katzmann).

Any guess whether he'd be willing to consider a liberal whose resume reads as moderate, i.e. not an activist? In my limited research, he doesn't look like an obvious ideologue apart from the FedSoc membership.

Great! Do you know if he's already done hiring for 2022, or is your knowledge of him hiring someone for 2021? I realize now I might be behind the curve even for 2022.

Note that the just-confirmed Judge Hinderaker was supported by liberals and opposed by conservatives as part of a bargain
