Purely on the issue of prestige, what would the average lawyer on the street find more impressive: clerking for SDNY Bankr. or DE Ct. of Chancery?

Gonna regret feeding the quasi-troll, but: DE Court of Chancery.

Chancery. They're both niche clerkships, but Chancery has a little more "ooh" factor. Though assuming there's a live decision to be made here the decision should be based on what practice area you're more interested in.

Have to say, if this is a troll, it's not a very good one. I mean, I don't think it's going to create streams of invective between opposing camps or anything particularly entertaining.

I agree with the above posters that the DE Chancery clerkship is more prestigious. Not sure what you mean by 'lawyer on the street' though. Many, if not most, lawyers will have never heard of the DE Chancery court.

My assumption for both clerkships if right out of school is that they struck out

They're very different clerkships with different (very good) career outcomes after it, but I agree with the chorus that Chancery is more preftigious.

That's implausible, give how extremely selective these opportunities are.

This is definitely not a troll posting. I am interested in both corporate and bankruptcy, and looking at the LinkedIn profiles of former clerks, I should be competitive for either position. I just want to know, all things being equal, when I'm at a dinner party in 5 years, what would get more "ooohs," having had a Delaware or southern district bk clerkship.

By this narrow measure both clerkships are equally mediocre and you should be gunning for a CoA gig

Neither will get you oohs.

A standard article 3 will get you more oooohs. I’d probably go chancery and shoot to follow it with a true article 3. The only reason to go the other way is if you’re committed to bankruptcy practice and/or convinced of the degree and timing of the next recession.

You're being trolled by folks who are hating on you for your presumptuousness and arrogance.

I will answer your Q. Chancery is hands-down much more impressive. Partners and associates at leading M&A and commercial lit firms will think you are hot shit.

IDK anything about bankruptcy, to be honest.

Yeah, this was literally the first reply, thanks for your contribution.

At a dinner party, i.e., with approx. one-two other lawyers in the room, who might well not ever interact with Delaware? Literally nobody is going to act impressed that you're pals with Strine.

You guys attend fancier dinner parties than moi. At the "dinner parties" I attend, folks think of a SCOTUS clerkship as a cool internship, roughly the legal equivalent of a Hill internship for a college kid. Folks would be more impressed hearing so-and-so's son got into the local flagship college than hearing such-and-such's daughter landed a SCOTUS "internship".

The whole "prestige" thing is way overblown.

If you attend an actual "dinner party" with the leading members of the profession, they'll all know what Chancery is.

Everybody knows what McDonald's is, but nobody thinks it's prestigious--especially now that the Dollar Menu has been virtually eliminated in Manhattan.

Wouldn't the leading members of the profession all know about S.D.N.Y. Bankr. too?
