Is 74 applications too many?

I've been encouraged to apply broadly but, at the same time, I don't want to stretch myself thin.

Out of curiosity, what were your stats and how many of your apps were sent to reaches/targets?Anonymous User wrote:I only got 11 interviews out of about 110 applications so I think 74 is totally fine.

I declined a handful of the interviews for various reasons (and one is upcoming) but I had a pretty rough run, yeah.Waterfront_79 wrote:Out of curiosity, what were your stats and how many of your apps were sent to reaches/targets?Anonymous User wrote:I only got 11 interviews out of about 110 applications so I think 74 is totally fine.
And jeez, 11 interviews? That's rough. Did some judges give you non-exploding offers or was your heart broken 10 times?
Weak shit, bruh. Do you even want to clerk?Waterfront_79 wrote:I've been encouraged to apply broadly but, at the same time, I don't want to stretch myself thin.

Glad you took it in good humor.Waterfront_79 wrote:Hah, fair enoughBlackAndOrange84 wrote:Weak shit, bruh. Do you even want to clerk?Waterfront_79 wrote:I've been encouraged to apply broadly but, at the same time, I don't want to stretch myself thin.
At a lot of (non-T14) schools, no.FascinatedWanderer wrote:Doesn't your clerkship office mail these out for you?
Agreed. Once you have your basic package of clerkship application materials together, the marginal cost of applying to additional clerkships is very, very low compared to the potential benefit. If you're pretty flexible re: geographical location, you can send out far more applications than you have.grand inquisitor wrote:there's no such thing as spreading yourself too thin in clerkship applications. if it gets to the point you have to start being selective about interview timing, you can do that and count yourself #blessed, but don't self-select yourself out of opportunities at the front end.
Yep. Went into my CSO (we don't have a clerkship office independent of the CSO) at my non-t14 school to ask if they mail clerkship applications for students. The people in the office looked at me like I was crazy.A. Nony Mouse wrote:At a lot of (non-T14) schools, no.FascinatedWanderer wrote:Doesn't your clerkship office mail these out for you?
Isn't uniform in the T-14 either (SLS doesn't... or didn't tell me about it which is bullshit)lawman84 wrote:Yep. I finished top 10% at HYS, no LR/LJ. Applied during 2L to around 100 district and circuit judges, all in or within 2 hours of NYC. 2 interviews. 1 offer. I would apply as broadly and to as many judges as you can.Waterfront_79 wrote:I've been encouraged to apply broadly but, at the same time, I don't want to stretch myself thin.
It really varies, I think. Are you only applying COA? Then, as long as you are realistic, 74 is fine. I applied to around 50 (exclusively COA) and got eight interviews (two after I had accepted an offer so only actually did six). I threw a couple feeder applications out (not super realistic with my stats but figured might as well) but also avoided circuits where I knew judges were unlikely to hire from my school (lower T14). There are just a lot of factors. I'd say 74 is fine but if you have the time and energy it certainly doesn't hurt to send out more.Waterfront_79 wrote:I've been encouraged to apply broadly but, at the same time, I don't want to stretch myself thin.
