State Court Clerkship

So currently I'm taking a state civil procedure class, and it is being taught by the State Supreme Court Chief Justice, and the state Appellate Court Judge. Given that I really would love to clerk for one of those two courts, would it be bad/unethical/ill-advised to ask them about a writing sample?

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It might even let them know that you're interested in clerking. If they already like you, they may invite you to apply for a clerkship with them, or put you in touch with another judge who's hiring.

Know a guy who did something similar with a COA judge teaching at my school. That judge talked to him about clerking generally, then offered to line up an interview with DCt judge in the same city.
