How do I broach the topic of clerking with my firm? I accepted a 2L summer offer with a (very small) satellite office of a national firm (about 500 lawyers nationwide). I will be the only summer associate at that office! I really want to clerk, but am hesitant to ask if they're ok with it -- what if they say no?

Given the timeline of clerkship hiring, I will probably have to make a decision on clerking or not before I start my summer there. Thoughts?

1. Why bother asking before you get a clerkship?
2. You'll be assigned an associate mentor. Ask them.

Don't worry about it until you get a clerkship. Focus on getting an offer. And focus on getting a clerkship.

Chances are, the firm will ask you at some point during the summer whether you're interested in clerkship. If they do, just be honest. If they don't, get an offer from them and, assuming you have a clerkship offer in hand at that moment, raise it with them if your clerkship begins right after graduation.

Agree with all of the above. Because your firm is a Biglaw firm, they'll almost certainly encourage clerkships (even at their satellite offices). It shouldn't affect your summer at all.
