Silly Benefits Question

Too silly to ask current clerks, not too silly to ask the internet. I'm working for district ct judge this fall in NYC. I've seen the federal government website on health benefits, but does anyone know if the court offers a gym benefit? This could be a discount at a local chain, or a reimbursable benefit through health insurance? (I assume the courts themselves don't have an onsite gym, this isn't SCOTUS.) Very curious since I want to join one but will wait the extra month if I get some killer discount...

Doubtful. Some gyms might have discounts for federal employees but the courts don't pay for it.

There's a small gym inside the courthouse. If I remember correctly, it cost $150 for the year. Note, however, that it's a
very basic gym. I think most clerks used it for the locker room/shower rather than as their primary gym.

No way! Is this SDNY or EDNY?

I didn't think the courts would pay for it, but most major employers have a group deal with a local gym. A former employer of mine did. It was like half off the full price. But that was private sector.

Most courthouses have a gym, in part because the marshals need access to one (I think they're actually supposed to train x hours a week or something?). Different districts must have different policies about who can use them, though (where I clerked you didn't have to pay, but it was faaaaaaaar from NYC).

EDNY has a gym, which costs about $20/month for clerks and is open until 8 p.m. during weekdays. It's somewhat sparse but has most of what you need (i.e. machines for cardio & weights). Don't know if SDNY has a gym.

Yes to SDNY and 2nd Circuit. I don't think, however, that there was a restriction on hours; my co-clerk used to do his running after the work day (which would be well into the evening).

DC District/Circuit courts have a gym. I only interned there and didn't use it, but my judge and the clerks used it frequently.

Yeah, the district court I interned in had a gym that was free for all staff.
