2L--When to apply for District Court clerkships?

I'm a 2L and would like to clerk in 2017. Did very well 1L but did not do well my 3rd semester after becoming complacent with my SA position and not studying. Now, because of my grades, I'm a borderline candidate at best. If I wait until I get spring grades back, which will likely be some time in summer, will I have missed the clerkship boat? TYIA.

You mean you want to clerk in 2017-18 term (or 2017-2019 term for two-year judges)? You should be fine for all but the most elite D Ct slots waiting for Spring 2015 grades. Things will take off in the fall of 2015 and spring 2016.

Thanks for the response. I don't know much about how clerkships actually operate practically, so I'm not sure. What's the difference? I graduate in 2016, so I figured starting in 2017 would be ideal. Thanks again!

You can definitely start in 2016, but applications for D Cts will be going on now through summer for most courts that have not yet hired for 2016.

Ok, thanks! During what term would most 2Ls graduating in the spring of 2016 clerk?

2016. The clerkship itself will start in late Aug or Sept of 2016 after the bar.

Ohh, gotcha! So pretty much now is the time to start applying then. What's the general consensus on how bad a noticeable drop in grades during the 3rd semester looks?
