Fairly new associate, sending clerkship apps. Have three possible writing samples.

1. 1L legal writing brief. 15 page excerpt. Won an award. Exclusively my work.
2. 1L summer memo for professor. 10 pages. Pretty progressive piece on vagrancy law. Exclusively my work.
3. Recently filed memo. 10 pages. Argument section 95% my work; facts/intro ~75% my work.

Thoughts?

I'd send the recent memo. I find it hard to believe your legal writing hasn't improved since 1L. And if it were me reviewing your app, I'd think it was a little odd that a law firm grad is sending a writing sample from 1L.

OP. Whoops. That "memo" should be "motion."

Thanks for the advice. I ended up talking with a current clerk, who agreed. #3's my main sample, with #1 my second.
