I am currently a law clerk for a district court and will be seeking employment for next year starting in January. I was wondering if anyone had opinions on whether or not having a clerkship for a district court pigeon holes you into trying to join a litigation practice group? Is there more flexibility than I think or does the potential value of a federal clerk stem from the litigation experience they get from that job?

Probably doesn't preclude winding up in a transactional practice, but it won't really be viewed as an asset. Many firms won't give clerkship bonuses or class year credit (or will only give one but not the other) if you are going into a corporate group.
