Hi all,

I wanted to start up a discussion on the big California District Courts for 2016-2017. Please post on developments, who's hiring when, etc.

Several N.D. Cal. judges have already hired for 2016-2017. Many have not. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Some are already accepting applications for 2017.

Any idea of what Breyer's standards are? I heard from someone he prefers a prior COA clerkship? Is that true?

His last several hires have come off prior COA (although I don't know about future years) and respected (although not always feeder level) judges. That should help you get a sense of the grades necessary. Also he only has one term clerk, so he can pretty much be as picky as he wants.

On a personal note he is a truly wonderful man and I couldn't recommend clerking for him highly enough.

Chhabria has hired at least one for 16-17 and interviewed multiple people. I am not sure, but suspect he may be full. Koh has also hired at least one, although I don't know if she's full either. Last I heard Seeborg wouldn't be looking seriously at '16 for a little bit, although that may be outdated information by now.

About the same as his brother.

Breyer requires a COA clerkship.

LOL @ the above comment. Sure, several Breyer clerks have gone on to SCOTUS (including his new colleague Judge Chhabria). But many of his clerks come from non-feeder COA gigs.

Eh. The point isn't that you're guaranteed a SCOTUS spot from Judge Breyer. The point is that it will be tough to land a position as his term clerk without being at least borderline SCOTUS-competitive.

Koh just posted on OSCAR she's looking for 3 term clerks for 2016-17.

regardless of what OSCAR says she has already hired at least one of those slots (and one for 2017-18).

Anyone know of movement from CDCAL for 16-17? I thought many were going to be hiring in June but I haven't seen much on Oscar.
