Simple OSCAR Question: recommenders vs. references

I'm sorry if this has been covered, I couldn't find it on a quick search. Judges on OSCAR usually ask for a certain number of recommendations, and occasionally they ask for a few references as well. What is the difference?

For my apps so far, my recommendations are from professors, whereas my references are my past employers. Does this sound right? For example, if a staff attorney position asks only for references would you list employers but not professors?

Thanks, I really appreciate any help!

References usually just means giving contact info for people who are willing to discuss/recommend you when contacted.

Your recommendations and references can be from either or, but yes it does generally make sense to use profs for recommendations (since judges tend to prefer that) and employers for references (since that is standard).
