Volunteer Clerk Position in NYC

Several Fed. district and bankruptcy judges have posted "volunteer law clerk" positions on OSCAR. As the name suggests, these positions are unpaid, and most ask for a minimum 6 month commitment.

Assuming one can afford to work for 6 months after graduation (in NYC for example) without getting paid, what insights can anyone provide on these positions? Has anyone done anything like this, did it turn into full-time (Term Clerk), firm job offer, etc.?

I do not know of anyone personally but I think there was thread on here before regarding this issue. Personally, if I have no gig lined up, can afford to do it for 6 months without pay, and its a federal district court clerkship, I would do it in a heart beat!
