If I want to practice in DC long term
Va. SSC (and this coming from a former Md. SSC clerk)
People from both do end up in DC--just look at linkedin, people end up all over--, but from what I've heard Va. is more competitive. However, I think it's important to consider the judges history as well; for example, if you are choosing between an Md. and Va. judge, it matters what they did before the bench because thats where there best connections would lie.
