Now what?

I am a current d.ct. clerk whose term expires in 2015. I recently accepted a CoA clerkship that starts immediately after this clerkship expires.

Originally, I was supposed to go back to my firm after this first clerkship; obviously that is not now the case. They've already deferred me once, and they still gave me the traditional post-graduation stipend. What is the right play here? Do I e-mail the firm recruiter, let them know, and ask for another deferment? Do I hold off on telling them at all? I'm not as concerned about the firm revoking my offer as I am them demanding immediate repayment of my stipend (as I do not have the full amount to pay back right now).

Has anyone gone through this? If they ask for their money back, is it usually a "we want it by the end of the week" type deal (I know firms are not banks and don't want to just loan people cash)?

Thanks.
