HELP! Recommender put wrong city in letters

Need your advice -- I am a good candidate from HYS, LR, top 5%. I have applied to about 20 federal judges, district and circuit for 2015-16, all in one secondary market (not 2/9/DC). I have strong personal reasons for the location.

I have only had one bite so far. I spoke with the Judge today to schedule an interview. He told me that it was strange that one of my 3 recommenders wrote about how I was looking to clerk in Y city (where I was born) not X city (where I want to clerk). The recommender wrote the wrong city!!

What should I do? I am thinking I need to send out more applications but I have no idea which of my prof recommenders put the wrong city. I emphasize in my cover letter that I want to be in X city but I wonder whether some of the response I have gotten is because of the sloppy recommendation. Advice?

Reach out to your recommenders now and figure out which one made the mistake. I highly doubt they'll be offended. Have that person fix the mistake and then start sending out more applications. If possible, you should also have your school or the prof (depending on how it works at your school) send the updated rec letter to the 20 judges you already applied to.

this is why I hate not being able to read your LOR. You have no idea what they wrote.
