Murguia has interviewed, but idk about offers;
McKeown has interviewed and extended offers for 2023-24; and
I don't have any knowledge of Schroeder, but last cycle she moved the first week of July.

First anon to weigh in on Bennett (I described him as likable if a bit awkward). I clerked at CA9 during Bennett's first year on the bench, and he did call a bunch of stuff that year, but that was the product of having literally nothing else to do. CA9 takes a long time to get new judges up to a full caseload for some reason, so for your first 6 months on the bench you're pretty much in the office looking at en banc petitions and not much else. Bennett has calmed down quite a bit since he began hearing cases, and I wouldn't be surprised if Collins does as well.
Bennett has calmed down. Not sure if that’s really because of a change in mindset or because the newer appointees have picked up the slack in the en banc process.

I agree with others who said he is among the more moderate Trump appointees, perhaps the most moderate after Miller (though it’s all relative...). And he also seems very collegial and generally respected by the other judges. He is notably pro-Government on criminal issues, probably because of his background.

As for whether Collins is likely to calm down...color me skeptical

Any insight on the four Idaho judges? Any particularly worth submitting to or any that might be less competitive?

I don't believe that Trott hires term clerks any more. He only sits on motions and screening panels these days, which means he only has a few weeks of work per year.

Tallman, Smith, and Nelson are all conservatives and should all be about equally competitive. Tallman and Smith both had good reputations as bosses and mentors when I clerked. Smith has a folksy, small-town lawyer manner about him and a great sense of humor. I don't know as much about Nelson.

In terms of how competitive the Idaho judges are, they won't get as many applications as California judges or as Sid Thomas next door, but it's still a Ninth Circuit clerkship and plenty of top applicants are willing to move to Idaho to get one. As a rule of thumb senior judges will get fewer applications than actives so Tallman and Smith might be marginally less competitive than Nelson.

My understanding is that Tallman has been doing a fair amount of sitting by designation on the district court in Idaho since he moved there, so if you want a clerkship where you'll get to experience both trial-level and appellate work, that might be a good one.

Also wondering about Judge Paez. Is he full for 2021? Has he started hiring for 2022?
