How do you know whether your recommender will write a good LOR or a plain/simple LOR? Do you just take the risk?

Have you experienced this problem before?

The only way to know is to ask. Or find out from previous people he/she has written letters for.

Worst case scenario, you don't use it. If you're worried about a lukewarm LOR, it might not be the best person to use as a recommender.

It certainly won't help you. If you have a slam dunk application otherwise, it might not make a significant difference, but usually people need all the help they can get (not a knock on applicants, just based on the competitive nature of clerkship hiring).
