Chin is one of the circuit's most liberal judges, as you'd expect for a former union lawyer, and is very loyal to Fordham and involved in Asian-American groups. He's one of the less selective NYC CA2 judges but still a fantastic/desirable clerkship, and I've heard nothing but good things about him personally.

Any movement from SDNY or EDNY judges? I know HLS has a list of judges that has offered interviews, wondering if anyone can share some info lol

That HLS list is ridiculously good -- detailed, kept up to date, and with some nice insider info. But it, for precisely that reason, can also cause a lot of anxiety!

As pp noted, his criteria are idiosyncratic and he is not wowed by fancy credentials, but mostly seems to hire people with whom he has some personal connection (or who is recommended by a personal connection). If you know any professors or others who know him and can put in a call on your behalf, you should definitely try and make that happen (though that's true in every case).

Any information on NYC you'd be willing to share?

How required is "required" for Newman regarding previous clerkship experience? I have externship experience where I basically did the same work of a clerk, but not an actual clerkship. Also, regarding preference for people with young kids, do I literally just mention in the cover letter that I have a young kid?

I can’t speak to Newman in particular, but externing is generally not a substitute for clerking for judges with such requirements.

Ah, that sucks. Well, doesn't hurt to apply anyways, I suppose.

Their career services/clerkship office probably wants to keep that locked up pretty tight and wouldn't appreciate people sharing it, like most OCI handbooks, etc

Yeah, but that’s why there’s an anon feature lol obviously they’re under no obligation to share! Would just be nice for those who go to schools with shit clerkship offices to hear about movement, especially since just hearing what judges have offered interviews doesn’t dox anyone or involve any work product from the clerkship office.

Judge Kovner got an admonishment from CA2 for trying to game the six-month list in a summary order today. Not a great look, especially since she didn’t get an opinion out until three months after an order dismissing the case for list purposes.

For someone who's unfamiliar with the six-month list... what's the implication here? Just not a judge doing her job or something larger?

The list of motions pending longer than six months serves as a shaming tool. I read it to mean that CA2 wants to admonish her for sloppiness. The judges where I clerk have taught me that it’s mostly like high school—huge emphasis on reputation, who you run with, etc. I wager it’s another instance of that.

Yeah it’s a name and shame tool to get judges to decide motions on time. Here she issued a bare order denying a MTD, but then didn’t issue an opinion for three months. The point of that is that since you’ve technically decided it, it’s not on the list. It’s considered poor form because it creates an appellate jurisdiction issue that can trap unsophisticated litigants, and because it complies with the letter but not the spirit of the rules.

I see Chin just posted for ‘23. Anyone know what his hiring criteria is like?
As pp noted, his criteria are idiosyncratic and he is not wowed by fancy credentials, but mostly seems to hire people with whom he has some personal connection (or who is recommended by a personal connection). I heard he is interviewing but I am unsure if all the spots are filled.

Has Chin interviewed and/or hired for '23-'24? I saw a Linkedin post for '22-'23 but that's all.

Does Carney send out letters to all applicants informing them of receipt of their application? Trying to figure out if it's some sign that I made it past an initial round of review. Maybe I'm reading too much into things.

Newman is widely regarded as an outstanding judge, but has by far the lowest caseload on CA2 at this point. He’s the only senior who isn’t fairly active.

Anyone have any insight into Merriam? I haven't been able to track down anyone who has worked in her chambers but I'm very interested in her.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
