Thoughts on or clerking stories about newer appointees: Rushing, Quattlebaum, Richardson?

Looks like some pretty decent praise for Quattlebaum and Richardson based on their backgrounds. Any idea what they're like in chambers?
I’ve seen warnings on TLS about how Rushing treats her clerks so I recommend looking into those. I don’t have anything to add though.
What warnings on TLS are there about Rushing? I searched the subforum and couldn't find anything posted so far.

Anyone hear anything about Floyd? His window to accept apps has closed, said there would be rolling interviews beginning April 1. Was just curious if that had started.

Bump for Rushing. Although quite conservative, she seems intelligent and was a talented attorney at Williams and Connolly. Any thoughts on her and her chambers(I saw she is in Asheville, which is a truly wonderful place).

No idea about his hiring, but a friend who clerked for him a few years ago had nothing but nice things to say about the experience.

Not seeing it when I search so guessing it was edited/deleted, but I remember a generic “make sure you talk to former clerks or others in the courthouse to understand what you’re getting into” regarding Rushing. 100% with you on Asheville being a great place, though, and her background (other than the ADF thing, but that’s my personal view) being impressive.

I know a liberal Richardson clerk who loved the experience and said he's a great boss.

Rushing is very, very conservative. I haven't heard anything about what she's like to work for but caveat emptor on ideology.

Anyone have any info on Pamela Harris? Hiring practices, environment, workload, etc.

Based on her resume and network I’d assume her clerks have pretty good outcomes, but there hasn’t been much new info on here since her confirmation.

Harris was one of three judges I interviewed with ~5 years ago. Besides being brilliant, she's very friendly, and the two go together very well for her - just wanted to chat about interests, mostly case-law related. Her clerks were a different story. Very high strung it seemed and completely grilled me in their part of the interview, no chit-chat.

I did not get an offer, but I ended up clerking for a different Fourth Circuit judge and my experiences with Judge Harris and her clerks was identical while in Richmond. She's great; her clerks are hyperactive gunners.

Such, such, such a nice guy and his clerks have a blast working for him. Query whether he's retiring soon though. I have absolutely no inside knowledge whatsoever, it just wouldn't surprise me based on age and ideology.

For what it’s worth, as someone decently in the know, my impression is that Rushing is great to work for.

You never know, but based on age alone it seems like Heytens is very likely to be the nominee for the soon-to-be-open 4th Circuit seat. https://twitter.com/VettingRoom/status/ ... 7890149393

UVA alum here. Heytens is incredibly smart, a great professor, and in a lot of ways is a very good person. He also has a huge ego and isn't particularly shy about who knows it--which isn't rare for an uber-overachiever like himself but also not the perfect judicial temperament. I think he'd be very good, albeit demanding to work for: active, engaged, and very interested in being a mentor and helping his clerks develop as lawyers. I wouldn't necessarily love the idea of being in front of him as an attorney, although he'd know my case inside and out, which is at the end of the day all you can ask for.

From what I know - Wilkinson hired his clerks for 2023 in December/January 2020/21

Another UVA alum. I know Heytens well from law school, and he's terrific. He is a super achiever, and he would likely demand a lot of litigants. He's brilliant and always well prepared. But he cares a lot about doing the right thing and being kind and respectful to everyone - the parties, his staff, his law clerks, etc. I imagine he'd be a pleasure to work for.

Haven't experienced the huge ego that another poster mentioned. I don't know where that comes from. I never saw him do anything I'd describe as egotistical or arrogant. But, anyone who sees themself as a federal judge and makes moves to become one probably has a more optimistic view of who they are and where they should be than your average lawyer does.
