Looks like Pryor filled her spots, pretty wild given she’s not confirmed yet, but I guess not too surprising

Her confirmation seems like a pretty sure thing given both of Indiana's Republican senators support it, but still bold to have hired clerks already. I heard she has a pretty good reputation as a magistrate in SDIN, but not sure what she's like as a boss (which could change now that she's on CA7).

Now that Dems have kept the Senate, I would hope that Biden will appoint Kanne's successor - any thoughts on possible nominees?

I know someone who interviewed with her in December and got a very positive vibe, though they haven’t heard back yet, so can’t say much more

Pryor has most definitely hired by this point (assuming youre asking for the current term).

No, but my understanding is she interviewed a significant number of candidates for the present term. She may have extended offers for 23-24 to those she liked but didn’t offer for the current term.

If it helps, she wrapped up hiring for the current term in December.

Hi, are there any (or former) NDIL clerks here who have a sense of the selectivity (e.g., grades/grade cutoffs) or other specific qualifications that any specific judges on NDIL look for? And/or any recommendations on judges who are particularly good bosses/good mentors?

She's a delightful person and fabulous boss. Beloved by her staff and the staff of many other judges in the courthouse.

Biden just elevated new judges to the NDIL. Looks like there is another vacancy. Which of the magistrate judges is most likely to be nominated if he nominates more?

None of them - they're still planning to use the list Durbin/Duckworth sent a while back, so it will be one of the remaining candidates on here: https://www.duckworth.senate.gov/news/p ... -illinois-

The only other active NDIL judges who can go senior before the 2024 election are Pallmeyer and Durkin. Durkin is a Republican so that's not happening, and Pallmeyer is unlikely to go senior before her term as chief ends (which will be too late in 2024 for Dems to fill the vacancy). I wouldn't hold my breath for the Dems to hold the Senate in 2024 even if Biden wins, so even if Pallmeyer goes senior, that probably won't be filled for a while. (This assumes that no other NDIL judges will resign early like Feinerman).

Yeah they're down to three, Daniel, Gowen, and Sheley. I would guess Sheley (long history at the ACLU) but I'd have guessed she'd get picked before Hunt so what do I know. I'd guess Gowen is the least likely; I don't see why you'd pick him over Daniel, who's younger and a former Marine, federal clerk, and summa cum laude Loyola grad (neither have histories in progressive litigation).

If I do a district court clerkship that ends in October 2024, does that make me ineligible to clerk on CA7 for 2024-25? From OSCAR, it looks like all positions start in early to mid-August.

Apply and when/if you get the position you can then work out the logistics between the two judges. I assume you know this, but just to be extra careful clarify by "work out the logistics" I mean talk to each of the judges individually and see if you can like chop off two weeks or something from either one to make it work. Don't like send a group email to both of them and be like "here figure this out."

Durkin just announced that he's going senior, so this is wrong. Agree that Gowen's more likely to be nominated than Sheley, but at this point they really should consider drawing up a new list.

I did not work directly with Jude Pryor, but I had a lot of interactions with her and observed court during my judicial internship with the SDIN. I also talked to her law clerk, who had nothing but nice things to say about Jude Pryor. She does keep her clerks busy though.

Yeah didn’t her OSCAR posting say clerks should be willing to work long hours or something? Are there judges who explicitly say that and end up being laid-back/easy to work with?

Also NDIN Magistrate Judge Joshua Kolar was nominated to fill the Kanne seat this week - anybody have intel on what he’s like?
