From personal experience, ties seem to help with Elrod. I (top 5%, top undergrad school, zero ties to anywhere on the 5th) and a classmate at my mid-T14 (top 15%, Elrod's undergrad alma mater, from Texas and returning there after law school) sent in apps at the same time with similar work experience, extracurriculars (FedSoc) and recommenders. My classmate was interviewed and hired, I was not.

Conversely Jones, Smith, and Costa hired top 5% students from my class, none of whom had ever been to Texas before their interview.

I'm pretty sure most of her clerks this term were experienced hires. She hires a mixed set generally, she was aiming for two 1Ls I believe to pair with people previously hired. The only person I know clerking for her has no Texas ties at all by the way.

She has also hired out for later terms if she likes you but doesn't have room for the term you applied.

He's only had three or four in the 30+ years he's been on the bench (the three listed here https://law.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploa ... t_2019.pdf are the only ones I know of). The schools he hires most frequently from are Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, and UVa.

Makes me glad I went to Chicago; UT is a pretty good school for clerkships but that list (outside of TX) is still like an order of magnitude smaller than ours.

Don't be ridiculous. Basically always = almost always. He's hired Chicago for the next two years and has hired from Chicago almost every year before the one his current clerks are in (2018?). That's like an outlier class year.

Oh, my bad then! I read it aggressively. FWIW can confirm he hired 8 Chicago to clerk from 1995-1999, 9 from 2000-2010, and 9 from 2011-2021.
