Oh, my bad then! I read it aggressively. FWIW can confirm he hired 8 Chicago to clerk from 1995-1999, 9 from 2000-2010, and 9 from 2011-2021.
No worries. That is some impressive placement indeed.

Apologies to keep recycling Smith in this to convo - do we think he's done with offers?

He filled 1-2 weeks ago unless people rejected, but I probably would have heard if he were not done.

To fully tie off this thread, Smith just updated his OSCAR posting in classic style:

"I have filled all positions for 2022-23. I hired 4 members of the Class of 2022. By not following any hiring plan, I completed my hiring this year earlier than ever before -- the end of June. The current, totally voluntary hiring plan has pretty much crashed and burned for unworkability and lack of interest."

Any insight into how grade-selective Higginson and Costa are?

Pretty sure Costa regularly hires around the top 10%, maybe 20% range at my CCN (though good grades aren't a golden ticket; I applied with Texas ties and top 5% and didn't get an interview). I've also heard being a public interest person gives you a boost with him.

I have not, but I gave up hope of hearing anything from her a long time ago. Was this before or after interviewing?

Higginson is very grade selective. His Oscar page says top 5% and that’s probably right. It’s less clear what that means for Y but think magna at H, several Gunther prizes at S, or Kent at C, each with additional things like substantial LR roles, clinic experience, moot court, et cetera. At the same time, he has hired from several schools and there doesn’t seem to be a set profile, with the possible exception that almost all of his clerks appear to have completed district court clerkships (cf. Judges Costa and Smith, who normally hire straight out of law school).

Before, I got a month confirming receipt of application a few months after I sent it and then an email saying I was rejected (no interview). Also indicated that she was full.

Was this for 2021 or 2022?

I am at one of HYS and this seems inaccurate to an extent. I know more than one person around top 1/3 of their class who have landed clerkships with Higginson. I know that is anecdotal, but this is a significant number of people. These people did not have LR either.

First anon. You seem to be vehemently agreeing. Again, there is no set profile and LR is one of several examples of things neither necessary nor sufficient. So your anecdata are neither surprising nor inconsistent; though they likely had enthusiastic recommenders.

Heard that Kacsmaryk is full for 2022 and actively reviewing apps for 2023 at the moment.

Yeah--he's that far ahead.

I know a Higginson clerk who was impressive but a fairly typical COA applicant from my school (CCN, top 15%, LR but not board, not published, no moot court, etc.).
