Top 10-20% T6 1L grades from what I hear and have seen. Not sure on T14 more generally.

I know Elrod has sent out some interview offers to 1Ls.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 2:06 pmTop 10-20% T6 1L grades from what I hear and have seen. Not sure on T14 more generally.

From personal experience, ties seem to help with Elrod. I (top 5%, top undergrad school, zero ties to anywhere on the 5th) and a classmate at my mid-T14 (top 15%, Elrod's undergrad alma mater, from Texas and returning there after law school) sent in apps at the same time with similar work experience, extracurriculars (FedSoc) and recommenders. My classmate was interviewed and hired, I was not.
Conversely Jones, Smith, and Costa hired top 5% students from my class, none of whom had ever been to Texas before their interview.

Does Elrod only hire 1Ls?

I'm pretty sure most of her clerks this term were experienced hires. She hires a mixed set generally, she was aiming for two 1Ls I believe to pair with people previously hired. The only person I know clerking for her has no Texas ties at all by the way.

She has also hired out for later terms if she likes you but doesn't have room for the term you applied.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:42 pmI'm pretty sure most of her clerks this term were experienced hires. Cannot speak to the others, but Smith does not care about ties at all and does not even ask about geography (e.g. “Why Houston?”).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:26 pmConversely Jones, Smith, and Costa hired top 5% students from my class, none of whom had ever been to Texas before their interview.

He doesn’t care about ties, but he has hired a good number of clerks from UT

I think a "good number" is an overstatement. He's only had three or four in the 30+ years he's been on the bench (the three listed here https://law.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploa ... t_2019.pdf are the only ones I know of). The schools he hires most frequently from are Yale, Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, and UVa.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:18 pmAnonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:12 pmCannot speak to the others, but Smith does not care about ties at all and does not even ask about geography (e.g. “Why Houston?”).Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:26 pmConversely Jones, Smith, and Costa hired top 5% students from my class, none of whom had ever been to Texas before their interview.

As somebody at Chicago, I can tell you he basically ALWAYS takes 1 from Chicago.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:35 pmI think a "good number" is an overstatement. Makes me glad I went to Chicago; UT is a pretty good school for clerkships but that list (outside of TX) is still like an order of magnitude smaller than ours.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:21 pmAs somebody at Chicago, I can tell you he basically ALWAYS takes 1 from Chicago.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:35 pmI think a "good number" is an overstatement. What does "basically" mean, then? None of his current clerks are from Chicago, for example.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:21 pmAs somebody at Chicago, I can tell you he basically ALWAYS takes 1 from Chicago.

Don't be ridiculous. Basically always = almost always. He's hired Chicago for the next two years and has hired from Chicago almost every year before the one his current clerks are in (2018?). That's like an outlier class year.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:40 pmWhat does "basically" mean, then? He doesn't have one from Chicago this year in chambers. That list shocks me tbph, I've been to his chambers many times and it always seemed like there was a native Texan there - I looked it up briefly and a fair number went to school in Texas for undergrad at least.

I guess this year is a double-outlier, then: no Chicago and no TX undergrad/law.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:53 pmHe doesn't have one from Chicago this year in chambers. Oh, my bad then! I read it aggressively. FWIW can confirm he hired 8 Chicago to clerk from 1995-1999, 9 from 2000-2010, and 9 from 2011-2021.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 4:02 pmThat is all I was wondering -- sorry if the question came off as aggressive; it really was not meant to.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:52 pmDon't be ridiculous.
