PM function still seems not to work but my knowledge is consistent with what’s posted above. For those who think an AIII clerkship is maybe worth suffering a little verbal abuse, errand running, and a dysfunctional chamber, I’d just say that you should use the fact that clerks regularly quit as a proxy for just how severe her treatment is. It’s close to unprecedented, if not actually unprecedented, for clerks to quit partway thru clerkships.

Any thoughts on the Trump appointees to the SDFL, especially in terms of personality/work-life balance?

Have heard good things about Coogler, he gets a ton of apps/clerks from the top-ish folks at UA. Only issue I can identify is that if you don't like college towns you really won't like Tuscaloosa.

All are well-respected in the district. None are overtly Trump-y judges and all have had government or judicial experience in the past

Thanks for the insight. Do you have any particular sense as to how Judge Singhal is perceived?

Judge Singhal sent out at least one interview offer last Friday to be done this week.

I don't know much about Raag Singhal, positive or negative. Altman and Ruiz are both excellent. To put Altman into context: he is a Trump-appointee, former AUSA, who recently *granted* a criminal defendant's motion to dismiss. I don't have a similar concrete example for Ruiz, but he is also a solid and fair jurist. And both of them are good people. Altman expects serious hours and serious work, but he's a family man and a pleasure to work for. I don't know specifics of Ruiz's expectations in chambers, but at least two of his current clerks are very happy working there.

from the bar’s perspective, Singhal has gotten decidedly mixed reviews. Partly because his opinions are like one paragraph of legal analysis on key motions (MTD, MSJ, etc) unless he (or maybe his clerks) take a specific interest in the case. Might be a holdover from his days on the state bench

Frankly, anyone on the circuit. But FWIW I do not have any conservative signals on my resume, so I don't think any of the judges that hire for conservative ideology will be interested in me. (AFAIK that would be W. Pryor and E. Branch off the top of my head.)

I think Brasher, Carnes, and Newsom also hire at least mostly Fed Soc, though I do know a liberal Carnes clerk from quite a while ago and I’ve met Newsom and he doesn’t come off as ultra-ideological.

FWIW, Newsom has said that he does not filter for any views other than a general belief in law as opposed to hardcore legal realist conceptions based on the raw exercise of power, etc.

It's worth noting that Newsom also hires during 1L spring, though, which logistically makes it pretty unlikely that he'll end up with many liberal clerks. Maybe some 2Ls cheating a bit on the plan, 3Ls and alumni, etc.

Any comments on MDFL judges?

Whittemore and Merryday - great to work for, generally (and correctly) viewed as the brightest stars on the district’s bench. Southern gentlemen. Merryday’s writing style is unique. His clerks work more than most others in the district but not bad hours (8-6)

Moody - also great to work for. Well regarded.

Scriven - don’t know much except that her clerks really like her.

Kovachevich - fantastic to clerk for. Despite her age, she’s still a force and she’s been on the bench long enough to see/know everything (and lots of great stories). Well regarded by the bar.

Honeywell - nice person but chambers is a disaster. Her clerks sometimes have to totally rewrite things a dozen times, and sits on draft opinions for months or years. Not well regarded by the district bar

Covington - her clerks regularly quit before their terms end (often within weeks of starting). Avoid at all costs. Don’t want to say too much more but if you’re seriously considering clerking for her, post non anonymous and I’ll message you.
Could you message me some more information on Covington?
Could you also message me? I just got an interview request for her
I tried to message y'all but the website won't let me for whatever reason. Youll have to send me a message.

Would you message me as well?

There’s no reason not to send in an app if you’re ready and they’re accepting one. Even if they’re on-plan you can upload to OSCAR and it will send automatically when apps open.

Jordan is reviewing apps now for his remaining Fall 2021 hiring, and has told some applicants to expect to hear from him "early spring." It's worth it to apply since he's still reviewing, but it helps to have personal connections since he is so popular and hires from a broad range of schools.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
