Everyone knows it's [(x/n + y/m) / z] * r, where n is the number of people in your room, x is the square footage of your room, m is the number of people in the apartment, y is the total square footage of the common areas, z is the total square footage of the apartment, and r is the total rent.

It's also important not to overlook the fact this pet owner is trying to co-habitate a cat AND a dog. The ensuing territorial war between those two will be worse than the one between this miserly former law student and her spouse (who must not work either if he can't chip in a couple grand for rent.) Ultimately, the only loser here is the person who had hoped to stake claim to some impermanent piece of the living room, evidently an unreasonable expectation for $1,700/mo (but hey, in room washer and dryer!)
