Well, while we wait for Vandy's website to stop breaking, I have a few questions for former or current students:

1) I've heard that Vanderbilt still only cuts checks and doesn't do direct deposit. Exactly when, if you remember, were the checks available last year? And how difficult is that process? I only ask because I'll be on a shoestring budget after paying to move and deposit.

2) When are section assignments made? The 1L schedules are posted on the intranet and I can't wait to know my schedule for the next six months!

3) I'll be moving a few weeks early to try to make friends and get settled. Any recommendations on places that are good for meeting new people or any things in particular I should be sure to hit while I still have ample free time?

1. Vandy cut checks last year, and you had to pick them up in the admissions office. This year they are mailing the checks to your address, but I'm not sure when exactly they will be available since it is a bit of a different system. Last year the checks were available the weekend before the beginning of the life of the law.

2. Section assignments came out at the end of July last year I believe

3. Depends on what you like to do. In terms of meeting other law students, most won't arrive until right before the beginning of classes. If you want to meet people in Nashville, there are a bunch of outdoor events (I remember going and having a great time at the tomato festival in East Nashville before school) and concerts around Nashville. People are generally friendly, so its not too hard to meet locals. However, if you are trying to meet people in Nashville, I wouldn't expect to meet many Nashvillians at the downtown bars... mostly people from out of town.

where do you see the 1L schedules?

ill also be moving down about 10 days before orientation starts, with probably nothing to do since i don't know anyone...so it'd be cool if we had a meet up or something

Go to the main page (law.vanderbilt.edu) and click on VLS Intranet. Log in using the same name you use for YES, then click on "Calendars/Schedules." Under Fall 2013, you can see it under grid or list view.

sweet. it looks like the Life of the Law orientation class isn't on Mondays. Does that mean we don't actually start until Aug 13?

after brief analysis of the schedule, it looks like there is no avoiding having at least one 8:25 AM class :(

Orientation schedule is up. No Life of the Law on Monday, but there is other 'Mandatory' stuff that day. And free food.

Are we supposed to dress nice for orientation(i.e. suit and tie) or should button down and khakis suffice?

I don't know of a business formal orientation anywhere. Most people will be dressed nicer for orientation than most other days, but that's just because most other days people will be in shorts and t-shirts. The latter will suffice.

I'm literally so bored at my parent's house. 1 week seemed like a month. I need human interaction.
