Attending Miami c/o 2016

Thought I'd start this thread for anyone who has decided to attend Miami. Feel free to share information regarding housing, classes, and any other information you deem relevant.

I was curious if anyone else is in search of an apartment for less than $900 a month (or slightly more if utilities are included). I don't care if I live in a closet, so long as I'm close to the school/metro and not in a dangerous area. Not necessarily looking for a roommate, just information on a complex that might offer such a deal.

99% sure I'll be attending in the fall too. Currently looking at places in the Brickell area but open to anywhere safe and not too expensive... hoping they release the roommate referral list sometime soon.

Ardolis, have you been to visit yet? I've seen you in other FL school threads too - what made you decide miami?

I was there for the Scholarship Weekend last week. I was really impressed with the presentation and the city as a whole. I received the Miami Scholars award and that was a main factor in my choosing of UM over UF and W&M. I want to do PI work, particularly international work or something with the Latin community in south Florida so Miami is really the perfect fit for me. Plus the weather and location are unbeatable (I'm from the North).
I was looking for apartments in Coral Gables or South Miami because there were some sub-$1000 options. However, I'm concerned about the quality of the complexes (bugs, rats, ownership problems etc). I'm expanding my search into Coconut Grove which is fairly close to the law school and a really fun and vibrant area.

I live in Miami and just as a heads up Coconut Grove is a pricey area. Miami traffic is pretty bad so I can understand wanting to live close to campus.

Yeah, CG is a bit of a pipe dream. I'll probably end up in South Miami. Do you have any knowledge of the area south of the UM campus, there are a couple cheaper apartments there, but I'm concerned it may be in a dangerous area.

So why exactly was this moved when the all of the "In at Harvard/Yale/Stanford" threads are allowed?

I believe the distinction is that those are for students that have been admitted, whereas this forum (and this thread) are for students who are admitted and have chosen to attend. You could probably make a thread in the other forum titled "In at Miami" for students who have been admitted but haven't yet committed to attend.

At least, that's how I think it's supposed to be in theory.

Anyone thinking about doing a certificate or a joint degree program? I plan to do the Business & Financial Law Certificate and am looking into the triple degree JD/MBA/LLM programs.

Also may look into the Street Law program. What are you all interested in?

I'm sure everyone has seen the new rankings. I'm not trying to be woefully optimistic, but the numbers are based on 2009 employments statistics (the year after the crash, florida hit especially hard). Secondly Miami had a large number of students pursue LLM's that year (about 7%), all of those students were idiotically counted as "unemployed". Just my 2 cents.

Anybody attending thinking of doing the James Weldon Johnson/Robert H. Waters Summer Institute program? Or know anything about it?

I understand it be somewhat of a waste of money. It doesn't put you in any real sort of academic advantage, at least no comparing it to the cost. It'd probably be better to try to work/save money during the summer or try to relax before LS starts.

Online it says the only expenses are books and travel and that housing is provided. Is there other tuition costs that they didn't mention on the information sheet?

Hmm, well it wouldn't be the first time..But I could be wrong..I thought in the past that this was a program open to all students where the cost was based on a credit-hour style formula. It is quite possible that this has changed or I am confusing it with another program. Regardless, I apologize for the inaccurate information and am imposing a 45 minute TLS ban on myself.

Despite the USNWR drop, Miami's job numbers improve by 3%+, they now have a higher placement than UF even with more students!

I'm thinking of applying to the JWJ, but I'm waitlisted elsewhere and want to keep my options open. Does anyone know if doing this forces me to withdraw my other apps?

I don't think so. From what I've read they don't mention a mandatory withdrawal from Waitlists. You do have to list all the schools that you have applied to on your JWJ application. Plus before the program starts you must have paid the entire seat deposit.

Does anyone know how generous Miami is with the 2L and 3L need-based grants? As well as scholarships for 2Ls and 3Ls? They talk about it on their website but not sure how much they typically give out each year...
