Merit awards don't come later do they?

Re: Penn Class of 2016
It has been confirmed that merit comes out later, though there's still some confusion because some people have received emails that are explicitly relating to need-based, and others have received emails like "You didn't qualify for need, but here's some merit!" For those of us who only got the need-based notification, it remains to be seen whether we'll get additional merit down the line.jychun412 wrote:Just got my financial aid decision. $0 need and merit I think.

I was about to withdraw but I guess I'll wait a bit more. Thanks a lot for the info!02889 wrote:It has been confirmed that merit comes out later, though there's still some confusion because some people have received emails that are explicitly relating to need-based, and others have received emails like "You didn't qualify for need, but here's some merit!" They send an email with a generated username to log into the site, so I think until you receive that there's nothing you can check.digifly wrote:Is there anywhere online where we can login and check financial aid?

+1. A few pages back I posted the email subject line/content. They are sending these out in waves through April I believe.02889 wrote:They send an email with a generated username to log into the site, so I think until you receive that there's nothing you can check.digifly wrote:Is there anywhere online where we can login and check financial aid?

Re: Penn Class of 2016
the law school is really nice, probably a little bit more beautiful than NYU. The undergrads seem to be generally very serious and they kind of scared me. The campus was beautiful and in the food court people seemed to be happy. The law students, as a whole, seemed to genuinely enjoy being students at Penn. The student who gave me a tour was very warm, and the student I ate lunch with seemed to be very knowledgeable (and he went to my undergrad!)
I got to meet with Randi Garnick and had a very nice conversation with her about Penn and the other schools I'm looking at, and I also got to meet with Anthony Henry, the Director of Financial Aid.
Overall, I really enjoyed the visit. Last night I got to go out for dinner with two friends, one of whom is a 3L in the law school, and the chance to meet with the other students today and get their perspective was really nice.
Objectively, Penn is an amazing place. I just have a hard time seeing myself there - so I'll probably end up at NYU or Chicago, unless Penn pulls through with scholarship money.

40k seems to be it.digifly wrote:Weeelllllp, looking at about 40k total for financial aid. I'm glad they gave me something, but I feel like that's sort of small. Anyone know the average size of Penn grants?

Was that specifically need-based? There's some hope that people getting strictly need-based will get revisited later for merit-based.digifly wrote:Weeelllllp, looking at about 40k total for financial aid. On that note, has anyone who received need-based grants received a follow-up with merit aid? Looking at you, people with super high numbers.

I'm also interested to know if anyone receiving need based aid is below both medians. I have a suspicion that even the purely need based aid has a numbers component to it. If so, it's unlikely that we will get additional merit only awards later in the cycle.

Re: Penn Class of 2016
It says that that was a "Law School Grant" on my decision tab, but on the budgeting breakdown it classifies it as need-based aid. So, basically I have no idea haha.02889 wrote:Was that specifically need-based? Re: Penn Class of 2016
It will certainly have an impact on your need aid, as they will take everything into consideration when awarding additional aid. It varies depending on the person. You're still eligible.chiach1 wrote:hey guys, i have a question.

So there is still a chance that I will be offered merit aid at some point? How long until I should expect to hear about that? That's need aid.

Re: Penn Class of 2016
I'm not sure, I'm in the same exact boat as you and wondering that myself. I do think that Penn finishes disbursing merit awards in April for those of us who have been admitted (per either their website and/or something in the admitted student packet - I don't recall). Last year, the bulk of merit awards were made at the end of March through mid-April. Awards made after April are just going to be for people who get in off the waitlist.digifly wrote: So there is still a chance that I will be offered merit aid at some point? Thankfully, we are mid-way through March, so the waiting game will be over soon for all schools (unless you're on some waitlists, like me

Thanks! It will probably take a lot. It's tough to look at UVA's financial breakdown and see SUCH a small number left over and then come back to the Penn overview haha.JamesDean1955 wrote:Also, congrats on the UVA scholly Digifly - what will it take from Penn to sway you away from Virginia?
