Re: Columbia Class of 2016
so if we got a big fat 0 in "need aid" is there any way, any point, of trying to appeal or negotiate, with other scholarships, since we know its not totally need, or at this point is it basically hopeless? my parents wants me to try...
also, as a side note, the letter is ridiculous. it starts off saying something like were pleased to offer you....and then says a loan amount. WTF. way to get people's hopes up

I'm pretty sure the fact that this is "need based" is a complete lie. I would definitely negotiate if you have any competing offers.jubee wrote:so if we got a big fat 0 in "need aid" is there any way, any point, of trying to appeal or negotiate, with other scholarships, since we know its not totally need, or at this point is it basically hopeless? my parents wants me to try...

It's def very strongly need based. I have numbers
That suggest 30k and sent in very competitive offers only to get the same

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
Pretty sure my offer wasn't need-based, considering my parents' background - I'd say there's at least some other stuff going on. What other stuff, I'm less certain about. Columbia's offers seem to be really inconsistent.

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
Is it possible Columbia actually believes you when you say you're not getting money from your parents? My parents income definitely puts me out of the running for need-based aid, but I was pretty clear that they weren't contributing anything, so that could've had an impact on my $40k offer.

I did this exactly too and got, it seems, the same amount. But I dunno - I read somewhere that schools assume your parents are fronting whether you deny it or not.ph5354a wrote:Is it possible Columbia actually believes you when you say you're not getting money from your parents? They may take need into consideration, but I think merit/numbers are a large part of it as well. Columbia is known to really value high LSAT scores and consistent with that people who have gotten aid generally are 173+az21833 wrote:It's def very strongly need based. I have numbers

No grant money w/ a 171, 3.74. Since I'm just about median lsat/gpa I assume it is not my parent's income, but my average numbers.
Any scholarship offers from Penn on down matter to CLS, or they will likely just trash it? Thanks.

+1 my offers are from UVA, Duke and Cornell so I have a feeling Columbia really won't give a hoot. anyone have experience that begs to differ?aiaea wrote:This is relevant to my interests (Penn especially).bobr wrote:

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
This thread is super depressing. I'm going to guess it depends more on your debt load than your school, but it's probably a combination of both. People with $200k of debt from T20-30 schools are probably more prone to regret than those with equal debt at Columbia. I have a few friends that are about to go down that road (T50 at sticker) and it makes me want to do this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V1hz5k8d5c) to them.tonton wrote:after reading this http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... &start=125 very bleak thread, been searching everywhere for "i went to Columbia now I hate my life stories" can't seem to find any.
I think I posted this on another thread, but I've been speaking to a CLS '07 grad as I make my decision, particularly regarding taking Columbia over major scholarships at the lower T14. She said that she had similar choices and definitely does not regret the choice she made, but she also said that I'm (we're) making the decision in a different legal market, and seeing what happened to law firms post-2008, she couldn't promise me she would make the same decision today. Not exactly a huge red flag, but it reminds me that we should't be basing our decisions off of the robust employment outcomes of 2006-2007 or the disastrous outcomes of 2010/2011, and it's hard to say what side of the spectrum the 2016 market will be.

Anyone else get a weird email today about Vendor Maintenance and submitting a W9 form? I locked in my deposit, so I don't know if this would've happened to everyone or just those already committed, or even just me.

So... is a Super Smash Bros. tournament happening after all? We have three weeks of P/F to start the year.

I'm down for any. Not that I've played any in a long time, but I think I could still hold my own in Melee or Brawl. Can we have an all of the above option?

I'll be bringing my projector for sure, so if I get a decent enough room setup though UAH we can do this in style. But I've gotten very used to playing it on an emulator with 360 controllers, so if someone has a real console they're bringing...joedf wrote:I'm down for any. Sold. I may bring a Wii, it'd just be for the occasional 4-P game anyway. We'll see!beepboopbeep wrote:I'll be bringing my projector for sure, so if I get a decent enough room setup though UAH we can do this in style.
