I thought for a second I hit URM or something on my app and started panicking. Glad I wasn't the only one!

Hi all. I'm also a non-URM who received that URM-scholarship false alarm. FYI, I was curious about the matching scholarship response times, too. I emailed the office, and was kindly informed that some decisions will likely go out by early next week... I'm hoping for the best.

posted in the other thread but just in case: any fellow lady admits want to split the cost of a hotel room? my $ is quickly dwindling for ASW and I'm not comfortable couchsurfing/can't think of any other options.

Does anyone have a sense whether Berkeley is more likely to match a scholarship from Michigan over Duke? I am ready to submit my Michigan offer but noticed that my Duke letter was mailed today. Trying to weigh whether it is worth it to wait to submit (since I suspect Duke might offer me more), or if getting it in to Berkeley a few days to a week earlier is worth it, especially if they view Michigan as more of a peer school than Duke, and are thus more likely to match...Thoughts? Thanks.

They want you to submit the scholarship from the school you are most likely to attend (after Berkeley of course), not the biggest offer. They make it sound like if the school is on the list of schools they will consider, ranking isn't relevant. It's your call.

Folks, admitted student here. The schools just released their "employed at graduation" stats and Berkeley's is relatively low. 72.6%. What explains this? Something to fear morbidly?!

2. Stanford – 93.2%
4. Columbia – 93.2%
4. Chicago – 90.6%
6. NYU – 93.1%
7. U. Penn. – 83.6%
7. UVA – 97.3%
9. Berkeley – 72.6%

11. Duke – 72.9%
12. Northwestern – 77.4%
13. Cornell – 69.7%
14. Georgetown – 63.7%

I'm not entirely sure as to the full situation, but I've read that some schools (UVA, for example) directly hire a significant percentage of their grads (and some say they do so in order to boost those figures...)
On a different note, has anyone heard back about Berkeley matching decisions yet?

I just got my matching scholarship email (really late on a Saturday?) telling me they can't match my other offer, and they didn't offer me anything. Hope you all get better news this week!

So I'm looking at the yearly budget...


how many matching scholarships go out typically? it seems like they don't give out a lot of money but...they're the most expensive school in the country (or almost). They must be giving out aid somewhat, right? Will we hear by ASW if we get a matching scholarship or not?


Also, another dumb question: Looking at their yearly budget, they estimate 5220 a semester for rent. Isn't a one bedroom/studio almost $1100/1200? I was planning on living alone and those are the prices I'm seeing. 1200x5 is 6000/semester

Although I'm certainly not capable of spending $3081 a semester on food....lol WHAT

I'd like to know where you're looking, because from what I've seen, 1BR/studios are close to 2000. Everything I've seen in the 11-1200 range is in a shared apartment, but I may be looking too close to the campus.

I will say, I called the New Californian Apartments just because they're so damn nice. Their 2BR start at 2200, which comes out to 1100 a month for one person, if you're interested in that. Free laundry, cable, and internet. Also, I saw on Berk's financial aid page that you can appeal for a higher cost of living amount and more loans. That's an option if you can't find anything within their rent limit, although it does make for even more loans, which is not cool at all.

CL; looking slightly farther away from campus (hills, rock ridge/temescal/Oakland area).

1100 a month just seems so high for one person, but idk. I think my 1L year I would do best living alone, and then once out of the woods so to speak could live with others. At the same time though, I would like to live in the same place for three years. I've moved more times the past few years than most do in a lifetime.

Not a great number, but don't compare to its peer schools. 17+% of UVA's number is school funded, so go ahead and knock that 97% BS down to 80 or 79% at best. And I think like 12-14 percent are the same way at both Chicago and NYU.
