Do you wish to share any observations about the student body ?

Well....that is a rather broad subject. I would say that overall the student body is made up of decent folks. During your first year you will likely form a core group of people who you study and hang out with. This sometimes gives you a slanted view of the overall student body as a whole. I notice now in my second year that not everyone thinks the same, applies themselves the same to law school, or takes law school as serious as my core group does. That being said, it is not an overly competitive group (no one is stealing pages out of books in the library, or dumb shit like that). I would just try to find people who you get along well with, and stick with them.CanadianWolf wrote:Do you wish to share any observations about the student body ?

How are job prospects? Are you on scholarship? Any idea on how many on scholarship retain them?
This is my first choice right now but I'm a bit apprehensive. Thanks!

+1....just received the Provost's Scholarship, but with this economy I'm still a little worried about the market.tfleming09 wrote:How are job prospects? Are you on scholarship? Any idea on how many on scholarship retain them?

I think that overall the market is improving. However, it really all depends on what you want to do. If you are hoping to get a job at a law firm making $100k+ then understand that as a DU Law grad those jobs are few and far between (yes they do exist, but assume that only ten or so people each year have this opportunity). If you are more interested in going to a small or medium firm, or going into public interest then your outlook may be better. Overall, I think that the market for DU grads is decent (keep in mind that something like 50% of the Denver bar are DU grads).tfleming09 wrote:How are job prospects? Are you on scholarship? As far as scholarships go, I think you just have to work hard. As far as I know the gpa requirement for almost all scholarships is a 3.0. Because the school has a mandatory curve of 2.85-3.15 the cutoff is literally at the median. I do know a few people who lost scholarships, but I think this was more a reflection of work ethic than academic ability. Keep in mind that just because you come in with a scholarship (or with lsat/gpa numbers above the mean) it does not necessarily mean that you are smarter or will perform better than those who did not. That being said, I don't think that a 3.0 is that difficult, and certainly is not unreasonable if you are receiving scholarship funds.

Thanks. BigLaw isn't desirable for me, I want to go the small/medium size route and make a comfortable living in an area with a high quality of life, so Denver is seeming like the perfect fit for me. If you don't mind me asking, what is your class rank? Just curious if your outlook is positive because you're top 20% of if you're around median or whatever.DULaw13 wrote:I think that overall the market is improving. Most people live near school, so either right around DU or Wash Park, South Broadway, etc. Some live downtown or tech center, which are both straight shots on the the light rail. I don't think that living near school is an absolute requirement (in fact I live a half hour away), however, it certainly would make life easier, and would help you get involved more in the social scene. As far as rent goes, it really depends on how much space you need and how nice of a place you want. I would say 1br apartments are going to go from $600-1000.

Re: University of Denver (DU) 2L taking questions
As far as the school, I generally know what to expect since my brother went there a few years ago. The school is AWE-inspiring in person, btw. My question is this: I just got my acceptance email with no scholarship information. My file only went complete 5 days ago, but everyone I'm seeing on LSN got their scholarship information with the email. Did anybody get scholarship information later? I really want to know, and I really wonder (if it hasn't been awarded) if you feel like there's a chance I could neg it up? I'm 2.81 and 167, so I'm really not sure what to expect.

I got mine with the acceptance email. In the acceptance/denials thread some dude just asked for money when he didn't get any and they gave him some. Since you're a splitter they might be less generous, especially this late in the game. May as well ask though.wallflower1987 wrote:As far as the school, I generally know what to expect since my brother went there a few years ago. The school is AWE-inspiring in person, btw. Update: no scholarship. Law school tip: want to destroy your yield? Accept 167s to a mid-T2 school but offer no $. This sucks because I was really excited about the acceptance, but I'm sure as shit not going to Denver for $40,000 more than Brooklyn. Not to mention, even going to Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Colorado or Creighton at sticker would make way more sense than Denver. I liked the school, but it's way too expensive to pay sticker at in this economy. Pretty much any non-T1 school is, and most of T1 is as well. Oh well; good luck to other DU students.wallflower1987 wrote:As far as the school, I generally know what to expect since my brother went there a few years ago. I can understand your frustration with not getting $$ from DU. I hope things work out well for you. DU is not for everyone, and paying full sticker definitely makes it a tough go.wallflower1987 wrote:Update: no scholarship. Law school tip: want to destroy your yield?
