I just wanted everyone to know that it is getting very difficult for me to focus at work thinking about all the stuff I need to do before going up to ASW.

OK PEOPLE!!
I think I am going to bow out of the beer and bacon tasting at Paddy Long's in Lincoln Park on Thursday (6-8pm, I believe). I am most definitely getting sick, and I want to conserve some energy to be able to go out Friday after the Follies for at least a little while. I know I'll be wiped out after traveling on Thursday, plus I'd be ditching my dad on the day we arrive in town. (I really wish he'd just flown in on Saturday night, but oh well.)
So there is a spot at the beer and bacon tasting organized by Samara that is available, and I would be happy to sell my voucher ($18) if anyone wants to join them. I think there were 5 or 6 of us going.
There does seem to be a 24-hour cancellation policy, so I (or Samara) would need to call and reduce the reservation by one by tomorrow if no one wants to use my voucher on Thursday.

PM me and I can email the voucher PDF and we can work out payment later.

I will land at 11pm on Thursday, so I guess I won't be able to attend anything really. But I leave Monday morning should we exchange phone numbers or something?

On the subject of housing:
I got some advice from a friend who recently helped his wife (separated. Long story.) find an apartment in Chicago. He says that Chicago's definition of a 'non-smoking building' can be very different from what you're used to, at least to us west coasters. Apparently sometimes 'non-smoking' just means that there's no smoking in the common areas/hallways, and that people are allowed to smoke in their apartments. Which, of course, makes the entire building, even an apartment where a non-smoker lives, smell disgusting as the smoke leaks through doors and walls and floors and gets into everything.
It makes me even more nervous about possibly signing a lease without being able to tour a place. I guess I'll have to get several reassurances and guarantees that 'non-smoking' in any building I'm looking at means the same as it does here in the civilized world. (Because wtf. That's just gross.)

I haven't heard any complaints about that sort of thing, but it's good to know and I'll keep an eye out in any future housing tours. (:

A plurality of the residents at the three housing tour buildings are feinberg med students, who don't seem like they would have a high smoking tolerance. On top of that, the buildings are not built like shit in Chicago, so I'd anticipate you'd find no problem. Some landlords go beyond regulation and prohibit all smoking, but if you were looking for housing 20 minutes away I'm sure some landlords let the tenants do what they wish in their rooms. Ive never seen it to be a problem among the uncivilized, but maybe bc it's harder to smell cigarettes than weed.crumpetsandtea wrote:Damn girl, harshhhh. o_o!!rinkrat19 wrote:On the subject of housing:

Seems like as many doctors smoke as anyone else.cmob wrote:A plurality of the residents at the three housing tour buildings are feinberg med students, who don't seem like they would have a high smoking tolerance.
A building does not need to be built like shit for smoke to get EVERYWHERE. Just look at the non-smoking floors in a mixed hotel. Still stink!cmob wrote:On top of that, the buildings are not built like shit in Chicago, so I'd anticipate you'd find no problem.
Out here, this is the norm. A smoky building would be a total WTF in Portland.cmob wrote:Some landlords go beyond regulation and prohibit all smoking,
I'm not.cmob wrote:but if you were looking for housing 20 minutes away,
Where are you from? Maybe this is a regional thing. I repeat, ANY smoking in a decent building out here would be bizarre. A lot of apartment buildings and complexes in Oregon even ban smoking on balconies and/or anywhere on the property, let alone inside the units. The only apartments I've ever been in that allow smoking inside the units are total dumps, not decent places to live.cmob wrote:Ive never seen it to be a problem among the uncivilized,
It's not. Cigarette smoke is incredibly pervasive. I can tell if someone two cars ahead of me in traffic is smoking in their car with the windows closed.cmob wrote:but maybe bc it's harder to smell cigarettes than weed.

Sorry to invade the NU thread (I stalk with interest as a likely future student at the less socially adept Chicago law school), but is this really unusual on the west coast? There are really buildings where you can't smoke in your own apartment? That's such a foreign concept to me.rinkrat19 wrote:On the subject of housing:

I will say that when I visited Chicago I was amazed by how few smokers there are. Maybe I'm just used to the northeast cancer corridor.

I'm REALLY excited for Wigmore Follies, especially when Holly mentioned that there would be booze there. I didn't know there was a preset afterparty though, that's cool!

The Follies was pretty hilarious last year. There were (of course) a lot of inside/school-specific jokes, but the program even had a handy glossary that explained a lot of them to the unitiated.crumpetsandtea wrote:I'm REALLY excited for Wigmore Follies, especially when Holly mentioned that there would be booze there.
