I'm a first semester 1L and have been contemplating emailing or cold calling attorneys to build a network. I don't want to be a bother to the recipients, but I also do not want to graduate and not know any attorneys in my city.
I've been very cautious about my "targets." For example, I am a big classical music fan, so I looked up attorneys on the board of the symphony, etc.

Re: Cold Calls/Email for Networking
I'd email folks- I especially looked for folks who went to my law school and/or undergrad and chatted with them about their experience. Or I asked them how they ended up in the type of law they practice. It may not get you a gig, but lawyers will usually make time to have a 5 minute convo over the phone about it or may even take you out for coffee etc to chat about that stuff.
