What happens when you exceed word limit by 50 words on 8h take-home

Post by octaviasays » Thu Dec 09, 2021 6:50 pm

It was an 8h take home exam with word limit being 4200 and I went over by about 50. The Professor is generally a very nice person but also maintained that she did not want us to waste time discussing trivial / unrelated issues (which I thought I did not but who knows anyway). She also said we should write down our word count at the end but I did not have time to do so. When I finished typing I was about 200 words over the limit, with nearly no time left, so I tried my best to delete several sentences but did not manage to get down to the limit by the submission time.

Just wondering what would typically happen in such scenarios... it's Duke law, if it helps

In my experience, the Prof will just disregard the 50 extra words you wrote. But given how minor the overage is, they might not even bother. Bottom line: Far from a big deal.
