Any speculation on Allen/McKay? Both seemed a bit higher for ‘23 so I wonder if it’ll come back down or if the trend is more inflation.

Now that we know order of the coif required above a 3.82, what are the chances I get cum laude with a 3.66 or 3.67?

It seems like there has been a grade bump since pre-Covid for some reason, but it’s worth emphasizing that 3.82 was not enough for the top 6% needed to get provisional coif (I.e. to attend the award ceremony). It will almost certainly be enough to get coif/magna when all is said and done. My expectation is that Cum Laude won’t be that different from previous years. Also - retracting my earlier comment - it looks from previous years threads like they wait to announce Latin Honors until early July at some point.

I agree. I think at this point 3.75 is probably below coif/magna. If I had to take a shot in the dark I would say coif/magna is now 3.785ish so approximately a 0.035 bump.

It's also worth noting I know several people (myself included) who do not have all our grades yet—sigh—so it may take a bit to calculate. I hope for the 2L's sake they get it out before the plan so they can put it on their apps.

Yeah, I haven't gotten all my grades...waiting on one but it could put me anywhere from a 3.65 to a 3.71 lol. So praying I'll get cum laude

What was it last year?

According to this thread, a 3.751 was enough for Allen, when historically it's been more like 3.73-74. I don't know what the McKay cutoff was but I imagine the bump was similar (historically been ~3.62).

According to this thread 3.62 was high enough for cum laude which is necessarily higher then McKay

Thankfully, unlike Latin Honors, Allen/McKay tend to come out fairly quickly after the semester ends, for the benefit of clerkship apps. So you probably won’t have to wait very long to find out. (Last year emails went out on June 8th).

2L Notations are on transcripts. For future reference, 3.748 was enough for McKay but not Allen

Been lurking to keep track since they cut it so close for clerkship app purposes. To add another data point, 3.789 was enough for Allen (but based on past data it doesn't seem like I was an edge case?).

I'm curious about whether the cutoffs might be higher than last year because 2024 is overenrolled. If they compensated by adding more classes/clinics, it means more discretionary A+s are potentially floating around (since every class can give one out regardless of the % limits imposed by the curve) *and* they're more spread out within the class. That then reduces the self-correlation, which could bump things up broadly at the high end. But I also can't imagine there would have been enough added classes to make an appreciable difference (they probably added at most 2-3 seminars and 2-3 clinics). So we'll see.

another data point: 3.756 was not enough for Allen. Likely missed it by the skin of my teeth. I am fuming.

I was the person earlier who said his friend got a 3.751. After the recent string of posts I decided to double check and it appears I was wrong and the friend counted two A+s as 4.0s and not 4.333s. I'm positive that my 3.78 was correct though.

How big is the usual bump between Allen and Magna? Holding at ~3.81 now that grades are back, and trying to decide whether I should feel safe at this point (not that stressing over this actually helps anything at this point).

If it helps (it probably doesn't) I had a 3.754 in 2022 and snuck into the Florence Allen, tho I'd guess I was the bottom of the barrel

I imagine this is very helpful as you're right, you probably were the cutoff. Also if 3.754 was Allen I guess I would say that those who are 0.05 higher, so let's say 3.805 should feel safe. Right now I'm sitting at a 3.835ish so I'll let everyone know what happens to me as well.

Is there anyone on here who came very close but missed Allen? I'm wondering whether to put McKay on my resume for clerkship apps. Am worried that clerks will see "25%" on my resume and just toss it right out of the pile. Honestly, it's ridiculous that NYU creates such a hard cut off, and provides no way to communicate your actual class standing. This entire system is bullshit.

If you don't put McKay then people looking at your application might think that you didn't even make top 25%.

I was in your shoes last year (missed Allen by .004 iirc). Advice I got from JCO was that it isn’t worth it to leave McKay off. It’s prominent on your transcript anyway, so leaving it off your resume will just look funny. They advised me instead to just make sure that my GPA was listed on my resume (with an “unofficial” tag so you aren’t violating NYU resume rules). It’s far from a perfect solution - since judges don’t know what the cutoffs are - but at least it gives them a rough sense (particularly those who hire NYU a lot). Feel free to pm if I can be helpful further.

Put it on your resume. And try to do really well 3L fall and spring to bring it up and hopefully get Magna by the end.

When will magna/cum laude awards be announced? Will the school email us or does it just automatically show up somewhere in Albert?

Seems like in early July. Registrar does not seem to be in too much of a hurry in calculating it.
