Does NYU order of the coif get decided after 5 or 6 semesters? Vaguely recall last year that a 3L said they got coif even though it was like March
There's a ceremony in the middle of spring semester 3L where the school honors order of the coif inductees based on GPAs after 5 semesters, but it's only provisional and it's not official. Then, after grades for spring semester come in, the official order of the coif inductees are notified on their final transcripts, and that official determination is made based on GPAs after all 6 semesters. There typically are a handful of provisional order of the coif folks who are knocked out of the top 10% based on relatively sub-par spring semester 3L grades, and then conversely a handful of people who didn't make provisional who end up being order of the coif based on relatively strong spring semester 3L grades.

That feels... kind of weird though no? Like why do it that way. I imagine the order of coif people who get kicked out feel weird/bad having gone to the ceremony and not getting the transcript and then to a lesser extent the people who were not originally in the order of coif are probably upset that they missed the ceremony.

Yeah, it's awkward and weird for those people. The only alternative would be to not have a ceremony at all or do the ceremony after 3L grades come in during the graduation or something.

Do you happen to know when provisional coif comes out or when we'll hear about it?

I think a few weeks before spring break but I'm not sure.

I feel like with your 3.8, you're probably a shoo in though. Nothing to worry about.

Anyone know what cum laude cutoff was for Class of 2022? Do we think a 3.66 is high enough for cum laude?

Yes, that is definitely enough. my understanding is cum laude is like 3.6.

agreed, you're good. I know someone who got cum laude w/ a 3.67 last year and '22 had inflated grades b/c they missed a semester of 1L.

I missed it with a 3.821

I'm shocked you didn't get it w/ 3.82, but then again, there's 0 transparency around all of this. Letters were individually addressed, so it may be that they're still going out(?) I made it w/ ~3.84.

If it is similar to the Allen one, it may just be a mail merged. Also shocked I didn't make it with a 3.82, but alas. Any idea what the percent cutoff was?

Also really surprised 3.82 wasn't enough. Do the provisional letters go out to the whole top 10%, or to some smaller segment to make sure people drop out after the award ceremony? If I'm running a 3.78 does that pretty much mean I'm out of running for magna/coif at this point?

It seems like 3.78 would have been enough for magna/coif like a year or two ago and our class did not have P/F 1L so tbh I'm a little confused on what is happening. One post a few years ago off-handedly mentioned provision was top 8% but even then I had figured 3.82 would be within top 8%. So there is a possibility provisional is actually top 5% or even lower? Curious if anyone from the class of 2022 who was provisional know how many people were there.

Particularly given reports that 3.751 was enough for Allen last semester - it’s hard for me to see how 3.821 could possibly not fall in top 8%. Obviously shooting in the (optimistic) dark though.

Sorry for the double post, but apparently it was actually top 6% a year according to a list going around.

I have no idea but I've had two friends text me a photo with a list of 28 names. Maybe the Professors got a letter or something and one of them shared it.

Any updates on magna/coif GPA cutoffs or provisional? Is it possible that class of 2023 has inflated GPAs and that's why a 3.82 is now insufficient for magna/coif?

To clarify, my understanding is that 3.82 was not enough for top 6% after 5 semesters. That does not mean that 3.82 is not enough for top 10% after 6 semesters. If I had to guess, I'd say the cutoff for magna/coif will be 3.8.

My uneducated guess is we won’t hear until at least mid-next week- even ignoring the the turnaround time for grades turned in last minute (I’m still waiting on two classes to post), there are always a few professors who turn in grades late, and they probably have to wait for everything to be in before calculating.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
