Seminar Papers: Need for Originality?

In a corporate-focused seminar (ie no need to use case law or statutes as sources - just scholarly books/articles) how original is a seminar thesis supposed to be? It's clearly supposed to be "original" but I feel like that's just a means of directing us to put in critical thought.
All I can do is find other secondary sources, so at best can't I just intelligently synthesize what the authors have to say.?
