Top Law Schools

I'm finding that at my school, the elitism among law students runs a bit rampant. I sense a certain disrespect from those on law review to those who are not, those in "elite law firms (higher up on vault)" seem to kind of look down on those in lower ranked firms etc. It's a bit exhausting, and I'm wondering if all of this kind of dissipates as you move further into your career. Any thoughts?

A lot of people in law school are there so they can look down on others in general.

Just worry about what you're doing and being happy with yourself.

This is generally good life advice as well.

How are you perceiving elitist behavior? How can you expect to make an argument without providing facts?

Where do you go to school? Columbia? Penn?

At NYU, certain socially diseased students list their journal membership and position in their email signatures, and talk loudly about editorial duties in public areas, but otherwise...

at least no one is bragging about copping dat biglaw job

I'm at HYS... talking incessantly about journal duties to the exclusion of anything else is definitely one example of such behavior. Excluding people whose vault ranking is "lower" from conversation is another example. But yes you're also right, it's possible that it's all in my head. Gosh I hope so.

Getting to laugh at the fart-sniffers is one of the best things about HYS. Don't waste the opportunity.

I didn't even mention my school until someone asked... so I must've been a very advanced humble bragger if I was one (which was not my intent). Also, this forum isn't exactly a place to humble brag that you go to H(or YS) since so many board members do attend T14.
I don't think this kind of a pointed question is necessarily warranted since I just wanted some sympathetic voice.

I don't think OP was humblebragging. The behavior she (?) describes is consistent with how my friends have described many of their fellow students at that particular school.

Not to say everyone will be like this, of course.

Yeah, as someone pointed out, elitism exists in every facet of life. I think OP is lucky that she (?) has never encountered it until now.

If you worry about everyone who thinks they are better than you, life is going to be tough.

I think a couple of posters hit it right on the head, don't trip on the lil shit.

But as for a practical answer, it has helped me to focus on the aspect of me that isn't related to law school. I know this may seem hard for some, but it is crucially important to understand that law school, and a career for that matter, is really a rather insignificant portion of your life. It is a means to pay bills. Find a passion. Create a family. Pick up disc golf (?). Do something that brings you pride in a healthy forum that doesn't breed an "eat what you kill" competitive atmosphere.

For example, I have 2 kids and a wonderful wife. I still get stressed on the correct application of BLL, and all that type of shit, but at the end of the day, I have to detach and teach a human how to be a human (and I also have to deal with my kids...ha).

Good luck to you. Step back and realize you have a lot of things going for you, and people like that exist, but they don't matter.
