Top Law Schools

Wondering if anyone knew of any podcasts on substantive legal topics, e.g. something like either a lecture, a summary of an outline in a given topic, etc.

The legal podcasts I have come across seem to fall in the following categories:

-- Beating law school (how to take exams, go to office hours, etc.)
-- Latest legal news and developments
-- Cool story about criminal law
-- Lecture by a brilliant legal mind about some philosophical topic in the law

I spend a lot of time doing things that make reading impossible. I know nothing in my ears will be a substitute for reading, but I was hoping not to let that time go to waste. In my particular case, I'm returning to law school after an extended leave of absence and am rusty on my Civpro, Crim, ConLaw etc. and it seems like just having something going over Civpro principles would get my frame of mind in the right place. E.g. spending 1 minute talking about why Palsgraf was important. I'm surprised how hard it's been to find something like this, given the volume of material out there for law students.

The Barbri app has audio versions of its review sessions for the bar courses.

Ok, that's exactly the sort of content I'm interested in, but I've got 3 more semesters so I don't think I'll have access to Barbri for quite a long time.

See if your LS library has Sum & Substance CDs, though they'll probably be on reserve.

They tend to be pretty long, but then often have one disc that's a shortened version of all the others.

I have enjoyed many of the 'Life of a Law Student' podcast.

Cool this is exactly what I'm getting at. Though I don't think the library has it.

Seriously though, law students have go be square in the middle of the podcast-listening demo. How are there not a ton of podcasts like this.

I listen to a lot of podcasts but I make sure none of them are about what I'm learning in law school. I use podcasts as a way to stay up to date with sports/film/television while I go to the gym or commute or whatever else I'm doing that isn't being in law school.

That's interesting. If you read my post you'll see that's not what I'm asking about here.

I know, I was the first response. I posted my experience as a response to your question for "why aren't there more," because I think the answer is that most law students, like me, who are the primary demo for/listen to a lot of podcasts, do so as an escape from school, not to supplement what I learned in class.

I see. That's a good point. Sorry.

It's just in my case I've got 5 weeks to brush up on my 1L knowledge.

Like the other poster said, Sum and Substance, there might even be a way to download those lectures as MP3s but some of those lectures saved me in Law School, I'd listen to them while I was driving.

Civ Pro with Arthur Miller is very comprehensive and good

If you're interested in contracts, torts, or evidence, you should PM TLS user SBL. He does private podcasts by request for specific chapters in these areas. It's better if you ask for something specific --i.e. "Please explain the concept of unconscionability."

SBL's podcasts are GREAT

esp the con law one

Kind of related: Im also a big podcast guy, and I found it really useful for some 1L classes (i.e. con law and civ pro) to listen to pretty much every relevant supreme court oral arg. They're using simple language and arguments, comparatively, and it's an easy way to reinforce the material and improve your policy arg abilities/perspectives
